Attention McLane Community: We wanted to keep you informed about this afternoon's situation that took place at the AutoZone located near McLane High School. Around 3:45 pm, we went into lockdown due to police activity in the vicinity related to reported gunshots. This precaution was taken to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and everyone on campus. Though the incident occurred off-campus and after school hours, our priority was to keep everyone secure. Once it was confirmed that there was no threat on our campus, we transitioned to a shelter-in-place, meaning all activities were held indoors to protect those still on school grounds. At 4:45 pm, Fresno PD cleared us of any further concerns, and we resumed our afterschool activities without further incident. The Sheriff's office has taken lead since the incident took place within their jurisdiction. We are deeply grateful for the patience and understanding of our students, parents, and staff during this time. Your cooperation helped us maintain a safe environment for everyone. We want to assure you that police activity never entered our campus. We know that some videos of the incident are circulating on social media, and we will have social-emotional support available on Thursday for any students who need it. Thank you for your continued support and trust. We are committed to ensuring the well-being of our entire McLane community.

The word "After" never ceases to amaze me when it comes to #SchoolSafety. Have we still not figured out how to proactively prepare for #SchoolViolence? Communities and school districts choose to roll the dice instead of making the "necessary" preparations upfront. Our team's analysis found that over 70% of school safety enhancements involve simple, low-cost strategies that could be implemented immediately. Yet, headlines continue to highlight the need for action. #Amazing. #SchoolSecurity #SafetyAssessments https://lnkd.in/exKrPDce #ABCNews Georgia State Senate - Georgia Department of Education

. The debate over Vance's controversial 'Fact of Life' comment on school shootings has ignited a fierce exchange between the Trump and Harris camps. Vance's spokesperson argues that his remarks were taken out of context, emphasizing that the issue is more complex than a single statement can capture. Meanwhile, Harris’s team maintains that school shootings are preventable and calls for comprehensive measures to ensure the safety of students and educators. The clash underscores the urgent need for a unified approach to address this critical issue. What are your thoughts on how we can make our schools safer? #SchoolSafety #Education #PublicSafety #PolicyDebate

The school shooting at Perry High in Iowa yesterday highlights four critical planning factors that are frequently overlooked by police and school administrators: 1. Planned attacks can happen before classes start. This is a time period when the school building is open but teachers, staff, and security either haven’t arrived yet, or are still getting ready for the day. 2. Most shootings at schools don’t take place inside a classroom. The shooting at Perry High was in the cafeteria and hallways. 3. Eight of the ten school shootings with the highest number of casualties happened in small communities (population less than 50,000). 4. School shootings are often planned as both shootings and bombings. After every school shooting, people say “we never thought something like this could happen in our community”. The reality is that these attacks can happen anywhere including at a school with 600 students in rural Iowa.

Spot on. The data shows patterns. Knowing patterns can help with prevention and/or intervention. These facts should inform the drills and emerfency plans for all schools. #safeschools #violenceprevention #mentalhealthmatters #dataanalytics

The school did everything they could. They followed every protocol. The SROs did everything they could. They followed every protocol. That's why this tragedy has been harder than others to sit with for me. Not just because it was so close, but because literally everybody did what they were supposed to do in that situation and lives were still lost. After a tragedy like this, everyone outside of education enters into a cycle of media hyper fixation, thoughts and prayers, debates about gun control, nothing changes, and finally back to normal....NOT SCHOOLS. SCHOOLS DO MAKE CHANGES. WE HAVE TO LEARN A NEW NORMAL EVERY SINGLE TIME. I have been teaching for almost 10 years and the safety and security measures have changed drastically over that time. When I started, lockdown drills were few and far between. After Parkland, we started doing them at least once a year. Now it is twice a year. When I started teaching, we had an emergency button on our wall in our classroom. Now we wear them on our badge reels. (And thank goodness because Barrow County had just implemented Centigix and it is credited with why law enforcement was able to respond so quickly last week, but also how sad is it that teachers have to wear it on their person now...) There are a lot of other changes that have occurred that I'm not going to name because I don't think saying all of our security measures on social media is the safest idea, but if you're curious ask a teacher in your life. We have a list of procedures we follow and it keeps growing each year. After every school shooting, schools don't have the luxury of going "back to normal". We have to make a new normal. If you take nothing else away from this, take this: please stop blaming schools for school shootings. Please stop blaming the teachers, administrators, counselors, etc. saying they "should've done more", especially with this situation because they literally did all they could. Yes there have been tragedies in the past that could've been prevented had people at the local level done things differently, this isn't one of them. No school wants to let a child slip through the cracks. No school wants violence to happen in their building. We are doing all we can to keep our students safe every single day. It is very i important for school officials to understand the relationships between fights and school shootings and edged weapons assaults. In my experience, two of the most accurate indicators that a middle or high school will be the scene of a shooting or more commonly, an edged weapons assault are the number and severity of fights and the level of gang activity in the community and by extension, in the schools. The types of incidents like the one described in this news piece are a serious challenge for many school districts should be of great concern. Hopefully, this situation won't escalate. As always, I caution that media reports of school violence are often not accurate, so I make no opinion on how this particular situation occured, could have been prevented etc. #schoolsafety #schoolsecurity #sro #schoolviolence

With ever increasing concerns about gun violence in schools, it's crucial for schools and districts to adopt an all-hazards approach. While high impact/low probability events are important to consider, it's equally essential to address high impact/high probability risks. San Jose schools' emphasis on "safe paths to school" serves as a commendable example of prioritizing more likely risk types over those highlighted in news cycles. #SchoolSafety #RiskManagement https://lnkd.in/egFn_k5j

As students head back to school, it is important to keep safety in mind. Here are some tips by the Fort Lupton Police Department to ensure a safe school year: • Children please use the crosswalks when crossing the street. Make sure you look both ways prior to crossing the street. • Motorist please watch your speed in or around the school zones. When the yellow posted “School Zone” signs are flashing, the speed limit is 20 MPH in the school zones. Fines for speeding in a school zone are very pricey. • Motorist please make sure we are paying attention for children walking to and from school. • Student drivers do not drive recklessly. Students that drive recklessly will be pulled over and be issued a citation for the actions. We have been having issues with high school students driving recklessly on Reynolds Street. Our SRO team will begin enforcing school zone traffic violations.

We need to do better
This is not normal. My heart goes out to the CICS-Longwood, Innovations, Senn, and all the other school communities that have been affected directly (and indirectly) by violence in our city this year. I don't have answers but I know we absolutely have to do better. https://lnkd.in/eekEwbps
