Over the past half-century, the Midwest has been experiencing an increasing divergence in economic outcomes due to out-migration and the changing industrial structure of the region. As large manufacturing facilities have closed and remaining manufacturing facilities have become more capital-intensive, communities that were once manufacturing-intensive have experienced long periods of decline. Michael J. Hicks and Dagney Faulk have published an article in the Journal of Economic Development Quarterly on the impact of a state-level, place-based economic development programme. https://lnkd.in/eZjFxTdT

Did some economic development reading last week and this weekend and I gleaned a lot of nuggets that’ll aid my work. Eric Klinenberg masterfully discussed the importance of social infrastructure in our communities and why public policy should reflect that significance. It really put me in rhetorical mindset of Seth Kaplan’s Fragile Neighborhoods. I’ll be comparing my notes. I’m doubling down on what I already knew - the local businesses have to take front and center stage in ED - they are the future and key to a community’s economy. What is a CEDS in Economic Development? Part. I CEDS stands for Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy. A CEDS document is one of the key elements of WNDD’s mission to diversify and fortify the regional economy. What it does is give cities, counties, tribes, and districts the planning process that successfully engages the region’s community leaders, private sector partners, and stakeholders. #economicdevelopment #wndd #westernnevadadevelopmentdistrict #strategy

See below for a recent piece I wrote for the Lancaster Chamber on the outlook for the Lancaster economy.
"Addressing these problems in the years ahead will be crucial to the future economic growth prospects of the county, but successfully navigating these known issues will pay dividends for the health of the local economy for years to come. And there is no doubt – Lancaster is up to the challenge." -Matthew T. Brennan, CFA, Fulton Bank This week's Digital Article Series highlights The 2023 Economic Forecast Breakfast & Lancaster's 2024 Economic Outlook. Lancaster County's robust economy, marked by strong consumer sentiment and diversified sectors, yet also underscored challenges including a labor shortage, housing supply constraints, industrial space limitations, and infrastructure strain, emphasizing the importance of proactive management for sustained growth.
