Feb. 5, 2024
In this episode, Sal Mercogliano - maritime historian at Campbell University (@campbelledu) and former merchant mariner - discussed a recent article by Lori Ann LaRocco on the role of the military in the defense of shipping in the Red Sea.

Ya’ know, I’ve sometimes wondered… with the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Space Force… we should have a new military branch called the Fire Force. A huge fleet of federally owned planes of all sizes that fight wildfires or large fires in urban areas. The USA should have a large fleet of planes ready to attack these fires anywhere in the country. Like the Air Force for wildfires. Also a large contingency of men and women to assist as spotters for the air assets and people who can assist existing firefighters on the ground. The USA Fire Force. The wildfires are consuming and destroying so much every year. Time for a bold solution. JMO.
Although I have not yet formed my own opinion about this idea, I LOVE discussing possible solutions to the long term management of all natural and man-made disasters. Whatever the cause, the impact to the lives of those touched by disaster is undeniable. Everyone should be working together to find the safest, fastest, and most effective response solutions, no matter the disaster. Communication, discussion, planning and preparation must be happening before the crisis hits.

Just had an article publish in the Winter 2024 issued of Civil War Navy Magazine about the cancelled secret mission of the Confederate war steamer McRae to convoy a host of merchant ships armed with weaponry from England to the Confederacy in 1861. I explore the ship, the scope of the proposed mission, as well as why it ultimately never happened. Great reading for those trying to understand the complexities of the first year of the US Civil War. Learn more about my research at www.neilpchatelain.com#history#civilwar#navalhistory

Be careful when you invest into the future to not invest into the past:
In the early 1800s, the Swedish navy planted 300000 trees to make sure they would have enough trees for building ships later. However, by the time the trees matured, they were no longer needed as new warships were made of metal.
Can you give a more recent example?
How do you prepare a 1900+ ton vessel for repairs? Check out the time-lapse to see the installation of USS Constitution‘s keel blocks and haul blocks in Dry Dock 1, Charlestown Navy Yard. The build-out of the blocks supported Constitution‘s keel and lower hull during a two-and-a-half-year restoration.
