Today, the European Commission presented its Competitiveness Compass. But will it point us in the right direction? Amid geopolitical turmoil and an accelerating climate crisis, the EU must keep its priorities straight: improving well-being, living standards and working conditions for people. The stakes are high—the EU economy is projected to lose over €50 billion per year to extreme weather events, while more than 20% of the EU population remains at risk of poverty or social exclusion. A #JustTransition must therefore be front and centre in any EU Compass. The Green European Foundation joined 41 other social, climate and environmental organisations to lay out what a fair, just and green transition can look like within the 2024-2029 EU mandate. As the EU enters a new mandate, the shift from the #EuropeanGreenDeal to the #CleanIndustrialDeal raises concerns. Will #competitiveness and #growth overshadow social and #EnvironmentalJustice? Will the vital role of #CivilSociety in policymaking be sidelined? We know there’s going to be a new Commissioner with responsibilities for Intergenerational Fairness in the next European Commission – this was one of the things announced by Ursula von der Leyen ahead of her re-election last month But what will that person’s mission be❓❓ Intergenerational fairness is more than just an add-on. It is fundamental to the EU’s long-term prosperity and the wellbeing of its people. And it needs to be embedded in decision-making. This comprehensive Mission Letter 📩 to the future Commissioner from #FitForFutureGenerations organisations sets out 9 key areas for the role ⬇ With this kind of leadership role, a new Commissioner will be able to ensure a long-view perspective across policy areas and shape the future of Europe for the better. #FutureGenerations #Fairness #Foresight 

🇪🇺 Last Thursday Generation Climate Europe (GCE) joined the Future Generations Initiative and representatives from the European Institutions and civil society at European Parliament for a wonderful event, "Europe for the Future: Developing Tools to Build an EU Fit for Future Generations" hosted by Lídia Pereira MEP. 💡 We participated in a joint panel with members from the #FitForFutureGenerations coalition, highlighting the fact that although proximate, future and young people are separate categories and require different protection mechanisms. 💭 But our discussion went much deeper: we explored the necessity for the EU to recognize legal obligations towards future generations, in line with the UN #PactForTheFuture, and discussed existing good practices, such as Wales' approach to envisioning and representing the needs of future generations. 👏 With the recent appointment of a commissioner on intergenerational fairness, the time has come for the EU to step up its policies in this vital area. Human activity is exceeding #planetaryboundaries, the very systems that make life on Earth possible. Food, water, and energy systems are threatened, as well as healthcare, education, and social services, and democracy, justice, and peace. Efforts to drive #sustainabilitytransformations need to connect local, national, and regional efforts. Identifying ways for the #GlobalGoals to truly go ‘glocal’ is pivotal for their achievement. Indeed, a diverse multitude of networks, communities of practice, initiatives, partnerships, and global transformation projects aim to do just that. Their approaches to localizing #SDG contributions are as varied as their diverse forms. This year, CLI’s Transformation Literacy Conference focuses on how different forms of transformation efforts, such as networks, partnerships, and global meta-collaborations – all contribute to localizing the SDGs. Did you know that only %15 of the SGD Goals are on track? The United Nations has raised an alarm that only 15% of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are on track. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged civil society to contribute significantly to the recovery efforts for these goals. He stressed the importance of grassroots action and political will in making substantial progress. During the #SDG Action Weekend, which precedes the UN General Assembly, various stakeholders, including #youth representatives and business leaders, convened to discuss and formulate strategies to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs. To counter this alarming trend, a multifaceted approach involving grassroots action, political commitment, and strategic partnerships is essential. 1. Strengthening Grassroots Action: Engaging local #communities in SDG initiatives can lead to more tailored and effective solutions. Civil society organizations, #NGOs, and community leaders need to mobilize and educate the public about the SDGs. Local actions, such as community-driven development projects and awareness campaigns, can create significant impacts and drive progress from the ground up. 2. Fostering Strategic Partnerships: Collaboration between governments, the private sector, academia, and #international organizations is crucial. Businesses can align their strategies with SDG targets, adopting sustainable practices and investing in projects that promote social and environmental well-being. Academia can contribute through research and innovation, providing data-driven solutions to SDG challenges. 3. Mobilizing Financial Resources: Achieving the SDGs necessitates substantial financial investment. #Innovative financing mechanisms, such as green bonds, social impact bonds, and public-private partnerships, can generate the needed resources. Additionally, international aid and #development assistance should be directed towards countries lagging in SDG progress. 4. Leveraging Technology and Innovation Technology plays a pivotal role in accelerating SDG progress. Digital tools can enhance data collection and analysis, providing accurate insights into areas needing attention. Moreover, technology can facilitate the implementation of sustainable practices in agriculture, healthcare, education, and other critical sectors. 5. Ensuring Inclusivity and Equity: Efforts to achieve the SDGs must be inclusive, ensuring no one is left behind. Special attention should be given to marginalized and vulnerable groups, including #women, #children, and persons with #disabilities.
