Deconditioning poses a significant challenge and a serious threat to health, crossing age boundaries. While much of the existing research concentrates on older adults, the impact of prolonged hospital admissions is equally concerning for individuals of all ages. The disruption of normative routines and activities, compounded by isolation and loneliness, can be particularly detrimental in inpatient settings. In this context, social engagement and physical activity are not merely beneficial but essential for well-being. Today, I had the privilege of discussing our #SportsDay initiative at the #MovingForward meeting, where we celebrated our successes and highlighted the profound value of movement. By prioritising such interventions, and valuing such principles, we can transform lives and foster improved wellbeing across patient populations.

Today marks day two of the NACCHO Relationship Building for Health Equity Summit in St. Paul, Minnesota. While walking to the meeting location, I noticed the well designed streetscapes featuring dedicated bike and pedestrian paths, traffic calming devices, and adequate signage. Improving pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure create literal pathways to advance health equity. These spaces promote active lifestyles, reduce pollution, and provide accessible active transportation options. Featured below, a snapshot from my walk. #publichealth #healthequity

Another great report reminding us what we've known for millennia but recently forgotten. Reducing levels of inactivity (which is subtly but importantly different) is central to a whole host of physical, mental and social improvements. So whether you're focusing on your health, wellbeing, happiness or opportunities for wider social circles, reducing inactivity and increasing physical activity (especially with friends) is probably the most effective thing you can do and/or promote.
Today's #SocialValueReport24, which has been published by Sport England, demonstrates that inequalities in activity levels are a social and economic burden but if we protect and invest in sport and physical activity, particularly for people that face barriers to taking part, we'll all be healthier, wealthier, and happier. As Professor Chris Witty, the Chief Medical Officer for England, states: "This reports shows that we need to make it easier for particular groups to engage in physical activity including sport." This is a key focus for the #ActivePartnerships network as we understand the local barriers and work collaboratively with partners to break them down, helping everyone to move more.
