Escaping to the Vineyards: A Moment to Pause and Reflect This year, after a very busy and exciting week Hager Group, I had the privilege of taking part in the vendanges in Burgundy for the first time. As I worked alongside others, harvesting grapes under the open sky, I couldn’t help but reflect on the importance of stepping away from our daily routines and immersing ourselves in nature. It’s in these moments that our thoughts become clearer, our minds more centered. But as much as this experience is a return to the land, it’s also a reminder of the deep connection between the vineyard and the challenges we face today—especially climate change. Each year, the vineyards are increasingly vulnerable to rising temperatures, erratic weather patterns, and shifting seasons. The grapes we harvest today are a testament to resilience, but they also urge us to take action to protect the land that sustains us. We were privileged (and worried) witnesses of our collective impact on our planet. The concept of "terroir" (climats) in Burgundy is sacred (and close to my family roots). It’s the legacy of generations of hard work, knowledge, and respect for the land. What we do today will echo through the years to come. We have a responsibility to preserve this heritage, not just for ourselves, but for the next generation of winemakers, farmers, and dreamers who will continue to draw strength and inspiration from the earth. This Chulha is used to cook food, heat water and milk, and much more. It saves electricity and the cost of buying a heater, geyser and immersion rod. For many households in villages, this humble setup is more than just a cooking stove; it’s a way of life. Food cooked on it has a smoky, earthy flavour you can’t find elsewhere. In winter, it doubles as a cosy source of heat while you prepare meals or boil water. Surrounded by nature, the CO2 emitted often gets offset by the greenery, creating harmony. Every time I visit my village in winter, the Chulha becomes my go-to. Boiling water on it, enjoying freshly cooked meals, or simply sitting nearby; it’s a comforting ritual that reconnects me with my roots. In today’s fast-paced world, this simple setup reminds us of the beauty of minimalism and sustainability. It’s a tradition that serves as a powerful example of how to live in harmony with nature.
