New week = new intern feature! Meet Laura Romania! Laura is currently interning as the Jed Wright Fellow for River Health with the Atlantic Salmon Federation in Brunswick, Maine as part of her Environmental Engineering major at WPI. She found this opportunity through sustainability job boards and reaching out to old contacts. Besides work, she’s excited to go camping, swimming, and tide-pooling this summer. Advice to fellow WPI students? “Reach out to organizations which meet your niche career interests even if they haven't posted internship opportunities. You can often find internship listings from years past to inquire about, or even just reach out asking to have a conversation about an employees organization, their role, and how they got there. More often than not, folks are happy to talk with you and share valuable wisdom, even if the connection doesn't turn into a work opportunity. If that organization does end up creating summer internships, you've already got your foot in the door and have shown demonstrated interest- this will definitely be taken into consideration when an employer is making final decisions for interns.” 💼✈️ #WPIInternship

That way they can test their skills in a new environment and broaden their horizons. I would also recommend choosing at least 2 host organisations. That way you can decide if your primary host organization is of your liking after your interview and if not then you have your second choice. Some time back, we had a German intern who wanted international experience with electrical installation materials. Piotr Saja comes from Germany, where he has also studied and worked. When assessing the possibilities of internship, we chose precisely the opportunity offered by Rigas Valsts tehnikums and Piotr as intern, because his experience and language knowledge were useful in the overall cooperation time. For 3 weeks, we gave Piotr the opportunity to practice with wiring materials and technological solutions available to us.
