It's always good to see a publication in print, although this one tells a rather depressing story. Today, I received a copy of 'Shaping for Mediocrity', written by Gibson Burrell, David Harvie, Geoff Lightfoot, Simon Lilley, and myself. My hope is that the book will be helpful for people going through similar struggles and useful for critical scholars, activists etc., who are trying to rethink and reimagine our universities. Trying to make sense of how US politics works? Look no more. 👇 To better understand one or both sides of the coin, we recommend reading the following books, each covering one end of the spectrum. 1. Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance - this book offers an insight into the mindset of the republican lens, and; 2. The Algebra of Wealth by Scott Golloway - a more left-centric, younger view.

This book gave a really nice account of the evolution of classical statistics which formed the basis for much of what is commonly used today. Also takes you into the mind of the three people mostly responsible for it: R.A. Fisher, Jerzy Neyman, and Egon Pearson from a technical and philosophical lens. A few big takeaways for me were: 1. Fisher probably meant well in his statistical work, but didn’t anticipate how it (statistical significance) might be abused later on 2. William Sealy Gosset was a mentor-like figure for Fisher 3. Fisher was an absolute genius I wrote a blog post elaborating on these points further (link in comments). #statistics #history

Have you discovered the guide to social complexity at Si? You can find it here https://lnkd.in/et2Aqigu The course and eBook draws upon research from many different areas and use complexity theory to integrate it into a fresh perspective with which to interpret some of the core questions within the social sciences. The content is organized into four underlying parts; in each part, we will apply one of the major modeling frameworks from complexity theory to interpreting social phenomena. The book first gives an overview of this area of social complexity before starting our first part on systems theory. As we lay down a basic model of a social system, we will go on to use this model to help us understand social structure and institutions.

Readings in Advertising Claims Substantiation, written by Dr. Daniel Ennis and Dr. John Ennis, is available via free PDF download! This eight chapter book explores topics crucial to making defensible claims. Among the important topics in supporting advertising claims, there are three that have needed attention for the last decade. These three topics are testing for equivalence, testing for multiplicative claims, and accounting for no preference/difference in product testing. After reading this book, practitioners will have a reliable basis for making defensible and truthful advertising claims that can be backed up by competent science. Our authors use their combined expertise to guide readers to develop a technical background in the three areas that support advertising claims substantiation. Outspoken Psychologist. Data-Driven DEI Advisor. I help organizations become anti-racist using research-backed methodologies. I also support BIPOC in professional spaces.
One of my favorite things that we do at A Better Force is hosting our monthly book clubs where we feature books by BIPOC authors. The discussions are always so thought provoking, and sometimes we are lucky enough to be able to do a Q&A with the authors themselves. Next week, we’re honored to host a Q&A with Bushra Rehman, the author of 'Roses, in the Mouth of a Lion'. It’s a beautiful coming of age story of a young Pakistani American girl grappling with her queerness and what it means for her faith. If you’d like to join the upcoming book club session, there’s still time to read the book! You can join our book club here: https://lnkd.in/gSvnz_EJ If you’re curious about why we feature authors of color, especially women of color, it’s because the publishing industry is still very white. In an NYT analysis of widely read English books published from 1950-2018 it was found that 95% of them were by white authors. The numbers haven’t improved that much in recent years - in 2018, 89% of of books from big name publishers were from white authors. (Sources linked in comments). We started this book club because these are the books we wished we had been able to read while growing up. It’s really healing to read these books and talk about issues BIPOC communities face, like whiteness being held as the default. The other reason we host the book club is that people need to read more books by people of color and hear from their perspectives in general, and this is a way for us to highlight those books. Come join us! While it’s a BIPOC-majority space, it’s open to everyone, including allies.
