I'm often asked how long it takes to make my paper flowers. I hate giving a time scale because it really does depend on a variety of things. Some flowers take 10 minutes, some take hours. Have you heard this before? "Make sure you are selling VALUE". It's become this vague, vanilla rally cry for when you have lower-priced competition out there. Don't sell value, let's "Tell Value". Let's use real stories from in the field. I have a client- she is a florist. She had 5 weddings last weekend. 5 brides. 5 sets of pictures that would last forever. 5 new beginnings. Thursday night- the refrigerated trailer she rents for big days like this, freezes all of the flowers. Inwardly, she FREAKS OUT! Outwardly, she is a total pro and pulls it off. She and her team rallied like the Patriots V. Atlanta when they were down 28-3 at half in that Super Bowl. No one that didn't need to know, knew. This was one of the greatest florist comebacks ever. I tell her we should file this claim and can't imagine a scenario where it isn't covered. We promptly deny this claim. I, inwardly FREAKED OUT. Outwardly, I professionally express concern and tell my client we are on it. It was our turn to rally. After 4 days of reading documents, making calls, and staying in close communication with everyone, claims covered it. I was so happy! That is value. You want to put a number on it? That was worth $11,000 to my client. Do you think she minds if her policy is $600 more a year? Create these stories, bank them, and use them when you meet new prospects.

If it doesn't spark joy, it's got to go.  There are a few exceptions to that rule. Work, children, families, and responsibilities may not exactly spark joy all the time. Don't get rid of them. #1, you can't. It's frowned upon. #2, you'll regret it. What you can get rid of are the unnecessary things that collect dust, clutter your house, and clog up your mind.  I always start with my clothes. For some reason I seem to think the same things I've been pulling out of my closet, staring at, deciding not to wear, and promptly putting back in my closet need to stay. They don't. If you aren't excited about wearing it, give it to someone who will be. Next I head over to the fridge and throw out the Sriracha that expired in 2015 and the leftovers from Tuesday that I swore I would have for lunch on Wednesday. You do not need ten salad dressings, and I know you're never touching that open jar of marinara sauce again so please toss it. The bathroom is last. I have so many bottles of who-knows-what that's supposed to do who-knows-what for my skin and hair. I use the same three things every day, and the rest serve one purpose: to make me mad about how little cabinet space I have. In the garbage is where they must go. What's left is a house full of things that I actually use and a mind that feels spacious. With this new found freedom, I will likely head to TJ Maxx for some more joy-sparking crap! #springcleaning

I did this. I literally cut down branches, collected pine cones, tied things up in floral wire. The results? A long garland, two pots full of crap (bought the birch sticks b/c although my neighbor told me I could CUT THE BRANCHES off his birch tree, I didn’t want to head over with a saw in hand), and an upgraded-with-pinecones-and-magnolia-leaves-and-ribbon pre-made wreath. (But I clearly didn't clean the door.) And it was a ridiculous waste of time. Don’t get me wrong. My entryway has never looked more festive! But as a long time DIYer, this was the project that’s convinced me to hang up my hammer. And nails. And glue gun. Here’s why: When my kids were very small and I wasn’t working very much, it made sense to DIY where I could. A. I’ve always been crafty. B. I had time on my hands. And C. I didn’t have the disposable income to buy, say, a wind chime made of vintage forks and spoons. But I did have ingenuity. Craft supplies. And a knack for small projects. Sometimes, like when other friends joined me, it was fun. But a lot of it was that I wanted something I felt I could just make myself. And when making something was within my skillset, and I had time at my disposal, DIYing made a lot of sense. This Christmas project did not. Why? The amount of time I spent searching for branches, dragging them home, and then winding them together with floral wire — all in an effort to save a buck or two — actually came at a tremendous cost when I consider the value of my time. It was time I could have spent following leads, writing copy, or spending with my family. Time I won’t get back. I’m not saying I’ll never make something again. Far from it. But unless it’s a joyful or experiential pursuit, the bulk of my DIY days are behind me. Because time is our scarcest and most crucial commodity, as business owners and people. And I don’t want to waste a minute of it.   #goodbyediy

What do you really want? Can you ignore the criticism and carry on? It seems ridiculous, but how often does someone else’s opinion influence your choices? I personally struggled with the question: “What is your favorite color?” I even learned to answer - “What’s YOUR favorite color?” If you picked green I would agree, I like green too. If you chose red, I would forget about green and pick red. It took me a really long time to realize two things. First, I don’t have a favorite color. Second, if it depends on the situation. I like a vibrant green in foliage, then I love the deep blue eyes. I like brown, but not for a salad. Third, I can just pick a color and it doesn’t matter, it's just a game. I can play the game with you and not feel boxed in by the choices I have made. I think that many of us put too much importance in simple choices. Whether it is picking something off a menu or deciding which road to take when you are driving. There is often not a single best answer. On top of that, things change. Just something to think about.
