#StrategicPlanningInOlympicSports Olympics is not just about sporting talent and funding. There is a lot of strategic thinking and planning needed to match the natural talent, with training in sports & disciplines that get medals in larger numbers. As Karan Nangia , the lead in Anglian Medal Hunt Company writes in his post on the Olympics and its strategic thinking in India. At the first Olympic Games in 1896 there were nine sports contested: Artistic Gymnastics, Athletics, Cycling (Road & Track), Fencing, Shooting, Swimming, Tennis, Weightlifting, Greco-Roman Wrestling. In 2024 in Paris there will officially be 32 sports contested, and one less than in 2021, and in 2028 there may be up to 36 sports. Phelps is ranked as the most decorated Olympian in history with 18 Olympic gold medals. He was advantaged by the high number of medals available in swimming. It was a lot easier for him to win multiple medals at each Olympic Games than an exceptional athlete in a team sport such as football, handball and hockey where there is only one of each medal available at each Olympiad. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games there were 33 sports with 50 disciplines, and a total of 339 events, with maximum in athletics at 48 then in swimming at 37.
