Little known fact: I was a champion discus thrower. 👊🏽🥏 Growing up, I always played sports. I was considered a jock - a rough and tough ball player, a fierce wing and defensive volleyball player. But I also threw a mean discus in track and field. I loved following Valarie Allman’s recent repeat gold medal victory in discus at the Paris Olympics. Why? First off, this sport is never in the spotlight. The training is intense and there is usually no glory. Valarie made it look effortless and she had her well-deserved moment of recognition. P.S. She also holds the USA national record, and owns 27 of the 30 longest distances for American women in discus throw history. 😳😄 It reminded me of all the work we do behind the scenes: on personal development, our career growth, our skill set, our relationships. Don’t expect people to always pat you on the back for every little thing. You may have to keep on working tirelessly for awhile before that recognition comes. But YOU are also responsible for creating those moments when people finally see you in the spotlight. Some may think, “Wow, she made that look easy.” But most likely, there were hundreds of hours of work behind those big (and small) wins. Your work ethic is the basis of success. The most exciting and newest basketball tournament is taking place this fall, 2024 USBC. What I am grateful for is the fact the USBN is changing and improving professional basketball in America. Yes, the USA is home to the National Basketball Association (NBA), the world’s league. But what about the hundreds of other teams that exist and the thousands and thousands of other players that just miss the NBA cut but don’t leave America to go overseas? Where can these teams and players be seen? Where can these players have a chance after college to continue their developmental process that could one day allow them to step onto an NBA court? Where does the next generation of basketball players and their family go to see a game if they cannot afford the cost of an NBA game? Through the USBN, you can find professional basketball teams and pro basketball players that exist and operate in many communities throughout the Nation that exist outside the NBA. Lebron James is not giving up his chair on the NBA court. If you are a graduating college basketball player, this means you might have to wait longer for your chance. USBN wants to make sure these players can continue to play, continue to develop, continue to improve, continue to follow their dream of one day making it to the top, the greatest, the best League in the world, the NBA. But with only 30 teams, and 450 players for the entire planet. If you don’t make it, it doesn’t mean you are not good enough, there is just someone on this planet a little better. And it should not mean you have to give up on your lifetime’s work and dream. Two great matchups from the NCAA Women's and Men's Basketball championships this year. One theme stood out to me from both games. Both Iowa and Purdue had the national players of the year on their team. Caitlin Clark for Iowa and Zach Edey for Purdue. Both players very dominant. However, in both matchups it was the better overall team that won (Connecticut and South Carolina). This can be directly correlated to an organization. Although individuals can make a big impact, one person cannot make the same type of impact as a team that is working together. Once you have a team working together towards a unified goal you can become unstoppable. #teamwork #ncaabasketball #marchmadness
