When it comes to science, accessibility isn't just a trend — it's vital for sharing knowledge globally. We're inspired by recent progress in open access, like the European Commission Open Science Policy Platform and the ambitious Plan S. These movements are breaking down barriers to scientific discovery. However, a crucial question arises in this era of openness: How Do We Reward Openness? Recognition and reward systems are key in academic publishing, Encouraging researchers to embrace open publishing is essential for advancement. Open science has the potential to drive innovation, collaboration, and free knowledge sharing. Let's shape our future together. How can we, as a diverse scholarly community, foster more integrated and rewarding open science approaches? 🤔💡 Share your thoughts below. #OpenScience #OpenAccess #DigitalInnovation #Research #Collaboration #LinkedInInsights

For some time, how we assess and validate scholarly contributions has been a topic of intense debate and scrutiny within the evolving landscape of academic research. The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) emerged as a pivotal initiative within this conversation. It challenged the longstanding reliance on flawed metrics such as the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) and instead champions a more holistic, transparent, and equitable approach to evaluating research. This article investigates the DORA movement’s origins, core principles, and far-reaching implications. Drawing insights from a diverse set of reference materials, it explores how DORA has been driving institutional change, reshaping research assessment practices, and empowering researchers to showcase the true value of their work. We dive deeper into this in our latest blog post 👇 https://lnkd.in/eH3jcGTN #ResearchAssessment #Editorial #PeerReview

It is so great to see yet another Journal Home expansion by one of our first publisher partners! The Royal Society, the UK’s national science academy and the oldest scientific academy in continuous existence, has expanded their Journal Home partnership with ResearchGate to cover their whole journal portfolio!! Our joint case study, published in 2023, demonstrated that the Royal Society saw an increase in usage of 64% for their initial set of journals. They have continued to see strong returns from the partnership leading to this latest expansion, which will see all their journals and 45,000 articles now available to our global member base of 25 million researchers. Additionally, over 75,000 authors have also already benefited from having articles added to their profiles on ResearchGate and made more discoverable through Journal Home. With articles in these journals having been viewed more than 1.75m times in the last year alone, it’s clear that this partnership is really providing value for readers and authors all over the world! Thank you to everyone at The Royal Society that has worked on this partnership, especially Graham Anderson, Lucy White, Phil Hurst and Chris Routledge. It has been a pleasure to see it grow and I look forward to our teams continuing to work together to help more researchers access and publish research in your prestigious journals! #ResearchGate #STEM #RoyalSociety #Research #OpenScience #Science Sebastian Darr, Mary Sweny, Philipp Hess, Mônica Duarte, Tony Scott, Axel Tölke, Sören Hofmayer Mathias Astell

Maybe you've never heard of Robert Maxwell. But he was instrumental in the research access crisis. Here’s what happened: 1. Acquired Pergamon Press in 1951 - Pergamon was already a well-respected scientific publisher - Robert rapidly expanded its reach and influence in technology and medical fields 2. Subscription Model for Scientific Journals - In the aftermath of WW2, there was a big demand for scientific literature - Robert introduced a model that required universities and research institutions to pay substantial fees to access journals 3. Academic Publishing Dominance - Pergamon Press under Maxwell aggressively expanded its catalog of journals - They often launched new titles with little regard for quality or necessity - This strategy contributed to the proliferation of journals and the fragmentation of scientific literature 4. Impact on Libraries and Researchers - High subscription fees strained the budgets of libraries and academic institutions - Many could not afford to subscribe to all necessary journals, limiting access to scientific knowledge and research 5. Long-term Effects - Maxwell’s business practices set a precedent for other publishers - Today, rising costs of access continue to hamper scientific research And yes, he was Ghislaine Maxwell’s dad. Sadly, much of his personal life showcases that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
