Jesse Moore has secured a place in the All-Around Final for Men’s Artistic Gymnastics courtesy of a remarkable Olympic debut in qualification.
The 21-year-old South Australian had to wait for the third and final subdivision to compete to determine his fate, as his All-Around score of 82.698 placed him in 13th place after the first two subdivisions are completed with the top 24 gymnasts to make the All-Around Final.
After a few nervous hours though, his dream was secured, finishing in 15th place overall in the qualification round, the first Aussie man to qualify for the final since Josh Jeffries in London twelve years ago.
Jesse produced his best routine on Vault (14.233) and his effort on Parallel Bars (14.200) was not far behind as he displayed nerves of his steel in the second half of the session.
A stunning Floor routine (13.966) was an excellent way to start his maiden appearance on the biggest stage of all, but his strength of character was on show after he a slight clip of his foot on Pommel prevented his score on his preferred apparatus (13.700) from being at the level he is accustomed to.
The slight hiccup did not faze him however as he produced a solid routine on Rings (13.033) before remaining composed on Vault, Parallel Bars and Horizontal Bar (13.566) to finish strongly.
Jesse will now compete again in the Men's All Around Final, being held in the early hours of Thursday morning AEST.
