Unlike traditional bulky systems, HoloTile consists of hundreds of small, round "tiles," each resembling a silver dollar. These mini omnidirectional treadmills work collectively to keep users within the pad, offering the freedom to walk in any direction. Lanny Smoot, a Disney Research fellow, showcased the technology in a recent YouTube debut. In his words, "Multiple people can be on it and all walking independently. They can walk in virtual reality, and so many other things." While the concept is awe-inspiring, it's crucial to note that HoloTile is currently a #research project. I’ve been utterly captivated by the concept of prioritizing Mixed Reality (MR), with the openness to blend in Virtual Reality (VR) based on personal interest. Features like eye tracking and pinch motions have been ingenious, making me rethink my past skepticism, for controllers & hand-controls. Yet, there’s been a noticeable shift in enthusiasm from VR to MR here, suggesting that the Advanced Virtual Platform (AVP) might gain significant traction, thanks to its unexpected appeal and capabilities. Starting with a commitment to quality means it’s poised for performing substantial tasks, setting it apart. While the Quest 3 shows promise, it still seems to lag in providing a full virtual desktop experience. Looking ahead, I’m optimistic. I believe the AVP has the potential to push both VR and MR into the mainstream, challenging the dominance of Meta and igniting further innovation.
