Okay, Junior Architects this one is on you and you need to hear this.
I love being able to go home at a reasonable hour to be with family or go have some fun as much as you.
But I also don’t like seeing senior architects stay late and I don’t want that to become my life either.
The amazing thing is that YOU can make a difference so everyone can go home on time.
If you don’t LEARN how to have ownership in your work, be thorough, and learn at good increments rather than after days or weeks of work. You not only impact your own career, but also your team’s trust in your work, the project as a whole, and senior architects staying late fixing your mistakes.
It is up to YOU:
1. ...to make sure you have work to do during the day.
2. ...to keep you team informed as you progress through the list, not right when you are done.
3. ...to be able to find help and do your research.
4. ...to learn to ASK QUESTIONS at baby steps during the task rather than after a week of work.
5. ...to be accountable! The fastest way to build trust and have more design ownership is being accountable, having ownerships, and being thorough with your work.
I’ll leave you with this quote that I heard a lot early in my career and don’t hear enough anymore.
“Early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable”
– Eric Jerome Dickey
