When analysing the 2nd practice times for Emilia Romagna F1 Grand Prix it can be seen that different cars/ drivers are the best by each sector of the Imola track. What means a sector? Each racing track is splitted in 3 sectors, which are different one to another in terms of chicanes, corners or straights- so different requirements. What the drivers and teams needs to find is the right setup to have the shortest time, meaning prioritising a sector or 2/ not being the fastest in one of the sectors, but on overall. Because what it matters in this case? The end result, the shortest time wins pole position! When speaking about processes in companies and how the customers requests are being solved, how often the performance that counts for the customer (time by lap) is not measured or the process is not optimized with the end result in mind? How often if we optimize, the “sector times” (silos) are prioritized (team/ department results) and the sight is being lost- time by lap. From studying race archives to tracking driver milestones, each step was a discovery of how Formula 1 and Spanish identity are so closely connected. As someone who’s passionate about F1, this project meant more than just research. It was a journey of appreciation, uncovering the spirit and history that make this sport so remarkable. A short history of Formula Student (Part 1): The Society of Automotive Engineers was founded in 1981, in the United States. The program later became known as Formula SAE. By 1998, seven teams were competing across the UK and US, and annual events were held at the MIRA Proving Ground, Warwickshire. The University of Birmingham went on to claim the top spot amongst UK teams. The IMechE Formula Student undertook management of the European venture, while remaining in partnership with the SAE. By 1999, Formula Student events were held in Birmingham, at the National Exhibition Centre. The Rochester Institute of Technology won overall, and the University of Leeds took top place for the UK. At the turn of the millennia, the US remained on top, taking yet another win. However, their victories would not last long (see next week's post for Part 2, and the podium emergence of Oxford Brookes Racing). In 2001, Georgia Tech took the overall win in Birmingham, with Leeds scoring highest for the UK teams. In 2002, the event relocated to Bruntingthorpe, Leicestershire. Georgia took pole position again, with Brunel University of London placing top for the UK. The Driver Training Event was also established, taking place in Wigan. The event was available to all teams participating in FS, who had built their own cars in preparation for the main event in July. Want to learn more about Formula Student? I used to drive and compete in various racing competitions in Sepang İnternational Circuit for a few years. Racing and competing with many other drivers, eyeing to be the first to the chequered flag or a podium finish. This is where human skills and power of the machine competes to the extreme, door-to-door on the race track, under humid and hot, even wet weather. Understeer, oversteer, skidding, spinning, being hit by others or crashing into others is part of the competition during a race. It was a valuable experience that requires high discipline and control of emotions. Racing is quite risky but somehow safe. It is definitely a challenging thing to do but worth the satisfaction if you succeed. If not, it would just takes a lot of your time, effort and money…. However, now I only compete with myself. Little money involved and time and effort spent are more for a healthier me. I no longer need to compete with others, I run my own race. I compete only with myself. I no longer in a race of being better than others, I just want to improve myself and be better than I was before…. I just want to enjoy and appreciate my journey to a better me….of course with more time to spend and more money to save… #growth #mindset #challenge #better #progress #compete #racing #experience #compete #time
