California Food Safety Act Will Prohibit Four Food Additives 📢 Manufacturers selling food in California may be impacted by the California Food Safety Act (CFSA), which comes into effect January 1, 2027. The CFSA will restrict the manufacture, sale, or distribution of four common food additives from use in food products intended for human consumption in California: (1) Brominated vegetable oil (CAS RN 8016-94-2); (2) Potassium bromate (CAS RN 7758-01-2); (3) Propylparaben (CAS RN 94-13-3); (4) Red dye 3 (CAS RN 16423-68-0). The CFSA allows California’s Attorney General, a city attorney, a county counsel, or a district attorney to bring action against violators of this law with penalties not to exceed five thousand dollars ($5,000) for a first violation, and not to exceed ten thousand dollars ($10,000) for each subsequent violation. These substances are all currently cleared for specific uses as food additives under US Federal food regulations. For example, brominated vegetable oil is currently cleared under US food contact regulations only to stabilize flavoring oils in fruit-flavored beverages and may not exceed 15 parts per million (ppm) of the finished beverage. As it is difficult to restrict US sales from the State of California, these restrictions should be of note to any manufacturer selling food products generally in the US. In November 2023, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed a ban on brominated vegetable oil for use as a food additive, and in the same announcement indicated that the agency is currently assessing the safety of Red dye 3. These four substances are already banned or restricted for use as food additives in the EU and other countries. Titanium Dioxide was originally considered for inclusion in early drafts of the CFSA, however it did not appear in the final version of the bill that was signed into law. Our experienced team can help you to prepare assess your food products for compliance with existing and upcoming regulations such as the CFSA. Extrusion stands out as an ideal method for crafting food-safe profiles. While the process for food-safe profiles closely mirrors that of regular ones, it's the subtle yet crucial differences that set them apart. Let's explain these nuances. 👇 The process: Polymer granules are fed into a rotating screw, melted, and forced through a mold. Controlled cooling cures the material, which is then cut to the desired length. That part is the same. It’s the pressure and temperature control which ensure EU food safety standards for strength and finish. NIAS Compliance: Which means accounting for non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) to meet EU 10/2011 regulations. A vigilant approach addresses impurities and degradation products, elevating food-grade profiles to the pinnacle of safety. Formulations: Adherence to food processing regulations is key. From conveyor chains to guide cords and side walls, materials must meet the requirements outlined in key regulations. Such as Framework Regulation (EC) 1935/2004, EU Commission Regulation (EU) 10/2011/2019/1338 on plastic materials, and manufacturing standards per Commission Regulation (EC) 2023/2006 on GMP for materials and articles intended for food contact. Supply Chain: By overseeing the entire supply chain, from raw materials to end users we ensure independence and reliability in a dynamic environment. We are actively monitoring for any changes with our suppliers that may impact food safety. 💬 Want to learn more about #Extrusion for crafting food-safe profiles? All good things come in 3's @HolyGrail 2.0, already in its 4th and final year, aims to improve the sorting of packaging and the recovery of materials through the implementation of digital watermarking. HolyGrail 2.0 has started in phase 3B... This means: In Phase 3B, sorting trials will be conducted on artificially spiked samples of PP food films (manufactured by PepsiCo and Kraft Heinz) and LDPE hygiene films (manufactured by Essity and P&G). Sorting tests were also carried out on rigid post-consumer packaging from Denmark and Germany, refined PET bottles, PET trays and paper cups. The aim is to assess the commercial viability of the HG2.0 system and to introduce an actual system in Western European markets and test its effectiveness in practice. The pilot rollout is planned for the end of 2024. We, @Linked2Brands as Associate Initiative Members of this project, are proud to contribute our expertise to this project and a hopefully later practical environment and to support the path towards sorting. #digitalwatermarks #sustainability #circulareconomy #holygrail2
