Our Julie Elise Maurer offers valuable insights into the East Coast ports strike and its ramifications for the supply chain in Law360. 📦 With tensions between the ILA and USMX escalating for weeks, industry stakeholders have already been preparing alternative shipment routes and diverting cargo to the West Coast, where the dockworkers are represented by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union and are not on strike. "Since the breakdown of negotiations months ago, and with the current administration's confirmation that it does not plan to step in to alleviate the strike, most supply chain entities proactively expedited shipments in anticipation of the strike and/or diverted to western ports," Husch Blackwell transportation logistics attorney and litigator Julie E. Maurer told Law360. "The diversions, of course, will lead to volume issues and price surges. Indeed, they already have." As the US East and Gulf Coast port strike enters its second day, 36 ports from Maine to Texas remain shut down with little reported movement in negotiations between the union and port terminal operators. More than 38 container vessels were already backed up at US ports on Tuesday, compared with just three on Sunday before the strike. With each passing day the backlog and impact to the supply chain will grow. Many ocean carriers have declared Force Majeure as a result of the situation. So far, President Biden has said there will be no government intervention in the matter; however, politicians and trade groups have begun to step up pressure, which is expected to continue to build until there is a resolution. RIM is monitoring developments closely and working with each of our customers to help navigate this situation. Please reach out to your RIM Representative with any questions, concerns, or for solutions on how we can help you keep your cargo moving. #portstrike #supplychainsolutions #ONERIM

Congressional Republicans Urge Biden Administration to Prevent Looming Port Strike gCaptain Mike Schuler Republican members of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the House of Representatives have called on the Biden-Harris Administration to take immediate action to prevent a potential strike at East and Gulf Coast ports. The stoppage, which is set to begin October 1, 2024, threatens to cause significant disruptions to supply chains and the U.S. economy as container terminals from Texas to Maine come to a standstill. In a letter to the White House, 69 Members of Congress expressed their concerns about the stalled labor contract negotiations between the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) and the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA). The current Master Contract, covering 45,000 dockworkers, is set to expire on September 30, 2024. #ports #supplychain #longshoremen #labor #strike #congress #politics #maritime #transportation #logistics
