ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) investing actually began in the 1960s, called socially responsible investing back then. The catalyst that started the practice was when investors decided not to invest in stocks or industries such as tobacco or companies/countries involved with the South African apartheid regime. Fast forward to the 1980s, the practice was renamed “corporate social responsibility” (CSR) and businesses started to recognize that investors wanted them to be more socially and environmentally responsible. Yesterday, I attended an insightful session led by Responsible Investment Association Australasia (RIAA) on the pivotal ESG Trends for 2024. Among the myriad of topics discussed, these key areas stood out to me: 🌿 Climate change remains a pressing priority, urging action on the Investor's Agenda. The discussion also underscored growing concerns such as deforestation, biodiversity loss, and the expansion of carbon markets. 💡 Economic trends, financial scandals, and shareholder alignment have a dynamic influence on fund performance. It's encouraging to see an increasing number voting engagement among investors across the ASX 300, particularly regarding governance practices. 🌏Challenges persist regarding transparency in commodity traceability and working conditions, particularly in supply chain due diligence, highlighting a need to enhance risk disclosure practices to bridge the gap with global industry standards. One perspective focuses on developing better frameworks for reporting, diversifying portfolios for broader insights. Yet, ultimately, it boils down to companies' willingness to make more sustainable decisions, emphasising the crucial role of stewardship and engagement efforts. China Proposes New ESG Rules to Keep Up With Europe. China has unveiled new ESG disclosure rules for its biggest companies as the world’s top polluter seeks to align with European requirements and bring foreign investment back to its struggling economy. More than 400 companies, including those in key stock indexes, will need to publish sustainability reports by 2026, according to draft guidelines released this month by China’s three main exchanges.
