Platforms and ecosystems have emerged as key concepts for strategy in networks. Three crucial perspectives -- the business firm, the university, and the government -- began to converge around these two core concepts a decade ago. These perspectives are different but deeply complementary. I trace the history in this paper, published in 2018.
