A brand-new session from our #webinar series is out now!  The Sustainability Committee of the FTTH Council Europe is launching a #new collaborative platform for companies to share #ESG best practices, build a #carbon intensity database, and access expert tools for measuring carbon #emissions! The initiative aims to support companies involved in the deployment of #FTTH networks in meeting the European Union's compulsory reporting requirements for large organizations from 2024 and SMEs by 2026. The platform includes access to a sector database and observatory, information sharing, and provides preferential access to collective or individual training, as well as to the TOOVALU Impact Software GHG assessment tool. In Europe, telecom operators are enhancing their sustainability efforts by cutting emissions, transitioning to #RenewableEnergy, and embracing #CircularEconomy. Nevertheless, challenges remain. Standardized sustainability metrics and harmonized regulatory frameworks are essential to accelerate progress and build trust across the industry. As a key player in digital transformation, the telecom sector must balance innovation and profitability with environmental responsibility. Leading Telcos are setting ambitious targets to reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2040. The crux of their challenge? Tackling Scope 3 emissions, which for many, represent the lion's share of their environmental impact. Recent insights from the TM Forum reveal that for over a third of Telcos surveyed, Scope 3 emissions contribute to more than 90% of their GHG footprint. Despite being outside their direct control, spanning the entire supply chain, there's a silver lining: approximately 45% are poised to significantly invest in new technologies and processes within the next three years to better manage and mitigate these emissions. This amendment offers a crucial opportunity to resolve inconsistencies between German regulations and EU guidelines, a necessity for the future of Germany’s digital ecosystem. Dr. Béla Waldhauser, Spokesperson for the Alliance for the Strengthening of Digital Infrastructures in Germany, calls for the harmonisation of national and European regulations.
