EU Launches Consultation on #Lowcarbon hydrogen On September 27, 2024, the European Commission opened a 4-week consultation on a draft delegated act outlining the methodology for calculating the emission savings from low-carbon hydrogen and synthetic fuels. Under the newly adopted #EUGasPackage, hydrogen is considered "low-carbon" if it has at least 70% emissions reduction (or <3.4 kgCO2/kgH2) compared to fossil fuels, regardless of the energy source. This opens up new opportunities for hydrogen producers in the EU who were previously limited to RFNBOs to receive public support. While this is a significant step in expanding the hydrogen landscape within the EU, key questions remain regarding specific targets and support mechanisms for low-carbon hydrogen at both the EU and Member State levels. #EU #GasPackage #lowcarbonH2 #renewableH2 #delegatedact

An extract from a recent article in the Financial Times that summarises well the impact that approval delays and spotty government funding are having on the potential of blue hydrogen to help get us to net-zero: "Hydrogen has been pitched as a clean superfuel that can decarbonise our heavy industry, power our vehicles and heat our homes - but its producers are finding that new projects are taking far longer to approve than expected. In 2021, the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated that the world would need about 150mn tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen per year by 2030 to be on course to cut global emissions to net zero by the middle of the century. Now, three years later, analysts predict that available supply at the start of the next decade will be closer to a 10th of that level. Projects are not being developed fast enough. More than 1,600 worldwide have the potential to produce a combined 65 million tonnes per annum of low carbon hydrogen by 2030. Of those, however, only 477 are likely to be online at that point, according to a recent study by consultancy BNEF. ...Rising interest rates have significantly increased the cost of new projects. In Europe and the US, government schemes have been set up to subsidise low-carbon hydrogen but payments are yet to start flowing and - in many cases - customers are yet to materialise." #Carbon #NetZero #BlueHydrogen

It's time for a reality check. The European Court of Auditors call the EU's hydrogen targets 'politically motivated' – and we agree! We welcome their extensive report on the EU's overly ambitious #hydrogen targets, echoing our concerns from 2022 when we called for a robust assessment of hydrogen production and use, and due consideration of H2's: 🐢 Inherent inefficiencies and high costs compared to direct #electrification 🌐 Potential to increase geopolitical dependency 🚫 Resource intensity, environmental impacts, and potential for stranded assets The EU must look past the H2 smoke and mirrors and recognise that we must⚡️ #ElectrifyNow to reach at least 35% direct electrification by 2030, and 50% by 2040. This more efficient and realistic approach to 🌱 #decarbonisation is based on proven and mature technologies like variable #renwables and electricity #grids. 👏 Let’s focus our scarce resources where they can make the most impact. 🗞️ EU Commission to propose new low-carbon hydrogen definition by the end of the year - and lay the foundation for a strong hydrogen legacy? 📰 'The definition, in the form of a delegated act, will put forward specific conditions to calculate the life-cycle emissions of low-carbon hydrogen. It will largely apply to what is widely known as blue hydrogen, made from natural gas with carbon capture and storage (CCS).' 📰 'The conditions will be challenging for the blue hydrogen industry to meet – both in terms of sourcing natural gas and the effectiveness of CCS technology... However... rising to this challenge will ensure that the EU builds a hydrogen economy with longevity, preventing future stranded assets, wasted investment of valuable public funds, and continued reliance on fossil fuel energy imports.' 🔎 Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/epqZTjTj -- World Hydrogen Week will be taking place from 30 Sep – 4 Oct in Copenhagen, Denmark!
