Proud that Philips has officially installed more than 1,000 MR systems with our BlueSeal magnet with helium free operations. Let me explain why this is such an important milestone as we enable healthcare delivery to more people in a sustainable way.
✔️ Every year millions of people depend on having an MRI scan for critical and often life-saving diagnosis of soft-tissues, spines and brains – and we are dependent on helium as the only element that can cool the powerful magnets that drive MRI machines.
✔️ Unlike many other natural resources we’ve become dependent on, liquid helium is non-renewable - a finite resource and will eventually run out. Yet, the #healthcare industry is the world’s biggest consumer of helium, accounting for around 30% of global use.
✔️ By applying our EcoDesign principles to MR, Philips BlueSeal went from using 1500L of helium to 7L of helium (less than 1% of helium than a traditional scanner). Our much lighter, fully-sealed MRI not only uses less natural resources but is also significantly lighter (by 900 kg!).
Since 2018, we have saved over 2 million liters of liquid helium, all while preserving the quality of a traditional MRI.
We recently also launched an extension of this breakthrough technology in a mobile unit: BlueSeal MR Mobile. Its increased mobility offers a great opportunity for expanding access to care, as we can now bring MRI equipment to many more patients worldwide, like near a hospital’s main entrance, or in remote areas.
