This photo, from 1996, was very likely shot on Ektachrome, maybe Velvia. The vivid and true colors are the clue. Also, 1996 was a transition period for photojournalism and sports photography. Pro digital cameras were "Data-backs", improving, but didn't yet have the resolution and dynamic range of film. As we all know, that would quickly change. These films had low ISO but for outdoor sports with the sun, there was no problem shooting them and getting great results. One problem with modern digital photography is the "overexposure" and using digital image processing techniques to adjust after the fact to closely resemble "the look". Film may never be the preferred capture method again but for the artist who wants to capture the light as it was shown, film is still the best way to do that.
