Short Columns: Definition: A short column is one whose ratio of effective length to its least lateral dimension is less than or equal to 12. Characteristics: The effective length to least radius of gyration ratio is less than or equal to 40. The buckling tendency is very low. The crushing tendency is very high. Load-carrying capacity is higher compared to long columns of the same cross-sectional area. Failure occurs due to crushing. The slenderness ratio is less than 45. Short columns have a large lateral dimension compared to their height. Long Columns: Definition: A long column is one whose ratio of effective length to its least lateral dimension is greater than 12. Characteristics: The effective length to least radius of the gyration ratio is greater than 40. Buckling tendency is significant. The crushing tendency is low. Load-carrying capacity is lower than shorter columns of the same cross-sectional area. Failure occurs due to buckling. The slenderness ratio is more than 45. Long columns have a small lateral dimension compared to their height. short columns are more stable and have higher load-bearing capacity, while long columns are weaker and prone to buckling. The choice between them depends on the specific structural requirements.

I think steel toughness is probably the least understood common property of steel. Literature is vague, its only skimmed in courses and people often avoid talking about it because of a general lack of understanding.
