Reflecting on my enriching Fulbright experience at Northern Illinois University, a noteworthy moment stands out vividly. In the very first class, every professor, in line with the Fulbright ethos, emphasized, "Please reach out when you need to reach out." Intrigued, I found myself seeking clarification from seniors, questioning whether they genuinely meant it. To my surprise, my inquiry was met with astonishment – a routine practice for them. This revelation highlighted the norm of accessibility and support embedded in academic culture in my department. Amid the challenges, my approach remains centered on investing all efforts into learning. The dilemma of approaching a professor, a concept foreign to me, prompted a discussion with seniors. Despite initial doubts, I took the leap, and the professor's swift response not only resolved the issue but also shattered preconceived notions. Completing a semester here has brought forth non-academic learnings. Arriving in the States with minimal knowledge about the region, my immediate supervisor's generosity ensured a smooth start with all essential necessities. What continues to amaze me is how professors, juggling multiple responsibilities, remain accessible and supportive. Beyond academics, they ease navigation through any challenge. The emphasis on punctuality is a revelation. Respecting time, both theirs and students', brings a profound sense of peace. In academia, one can excel without compromising consideration for students. There's no need to appropriate intellectual properties; collaboration can be the cornerstone of success. #FulbrightExperience #AcademicJourney #CulturalExchange #NIUExperience

Opening global opportunities 🗺️ 🌐 The U.S. Department of State has recognized #UMassAmherst as a Fulbright Top Producing Institution — one of the nation’s universities with the highest number of students, faculty and administrators selected for the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student and Fulbright U.S. Scholar Programs for the 2023-24 academic year. Out of the 170 colleges and universities recognized overall, UMass Amherst is one of only 12 institutions recognized for both the Fulbright U.S. Student Program and the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program this year. It is the only institution in Massachusetts—and one of only three in New England—to receive this distinction. This is the fifth time UMass Amherst, the commonwealth’s flagship campus, has been recognized as a Fulbright Top Producing Institution for U.S. Students since the project began in 2009-2010, and the third time as a Fulbright Top Producing Institution for U.S. Scholars. 🔗 Read more here: https://bit.ly/3uBisr1 U.S. Department of State The Fulbright Program

In my undergraduate career, I had no idea academic certificates were even a thing. But, then I met with an academic advisor. In analyzing my degree requirements, and looking at what I had already taken, we discovered that I had already completed the requirements for a certificate in Economics. It was also discovered that by just adding two more courses, I could wrap up my bachelor’s degree with two minors! Never underestimate the ‘motivation through certification!’ Just by being intentional with credits, I now have additional credentialing that augments my degree. More importantly, adding a certificate equipped me with skills, knowledge, content, and perspective that I would not have otherwise had. I continued this mentality and strategy into graduate school as well, where I also earned a graduate certificate in College Teaching. It was all by being intentional with my credits. Here at UGA, UGA Advising Services and the The Student Government Association at the University of Georgia held the first-ever Certificate Fair, a showcase highlighting all of the certificate options available to UGA students. Students could interact with faculty, departments, colleges, and offices that offer both academic and experiential certificates. I represented the UGA Office of Global Engagement and spoke with many students and advisors about OGE’s Global Education and Leadership Certificate, and the Peace Corps Prep certificate, two experiential certificates that can challenge students to think critically about their role in the world, build cultural competence, and help students grow into responsible global citizens. The first Certificate Fair was a resounding success! I really wish something like this was around while I was in undergrad. If it had, I might have a lot more certificates to my credential!
