🌟 Empowering Minds, Transforming Futures 🌟 It was great to volunteer as a speaker assistant at Canadian Association of College and University Student Services Conference 2024: Supporting Our Students; Sustaining Ourselves. The conference dived into how we can advocate for change for both our students and ourselves. It explored ways to transition from just sustaining to truly thriving, and shared practical strategies to strengthen and nourish our work and our teams. It’s all about advocating for students, providing holistic support, and honoring their diverse identities and perspectives. It was great to join this virtual gathering, engage in meaningful discussions, and learn from our incredible community. 📚 The insightful sessions I assisted with were: AI Tutor for Higher Education: What could it do, how it can help, and why would I want to deploy one – Robert W. The Counsellors’ Guide to Sleep Health – Cliff Robinson & Shyann Vosper What’s Happening?! How Top Institutions are Avoiding Burn-Out and Managing Events & Campus-Wide Calendars for Increased Student Engagement & Success – Madeline Hauck Great work CACUSS Team! My personal favorite section from this article: "A pivotal year for AI regulation: Expect to see new frameworks with the intent to protect intellectual property and academic integrity. While we haven’t yet scratched the surface of AI’s full capabilities, I believe regulation will soon get us closer to addressing the need for pertinent guardrails around AI, while balancing both innovation and protections. Classrooms go immersive: AI is progressing at a remarkable rate, moving from structured text analysis to unstructured data, video, audio, and immersive AR/VR experiences. For higher education, this creates opportunities to expand teaching methods, particularly in vocational fields. Imagine learning trades through VR, allowing students to practice hands-on skills virtually. Institutions can redefine “classroom learning” and broaden their curriculums like never before. Change management takes center stage: Incorporating AI isn’t just about adopting new tools–it requires a comprehensive shift in how institutions operate. As universities integrate AI tools such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, they face a steep change management curve, one that necessitates both structural shifts and cultural buy-in. Soft skills to shine in the age of AI: As AI becomes ubiquitous, the importance of soft and transferable skills are again having their day in the sun. Understanding how to leverage AI tools will be essential for students to stay competitive in the job market, but communication, adaptability, leadership, and critical thinking are needed to work effectively within the teams that use these technologies. These skills aren’t going anywhere and will arguably become more important as AI revolutionizes how we live and work." —Bruce Dahlgren, CEO, Anthology

Really excited to share that our project "Harnessing Global Standards for Technological Leadership" led with my collaborators Dr John Moffat (Durham University Business School) and Dr Xin Deng (Alliance Manchester Business School), has been funded by the Innovation & Research Caucus. We are pleased to join a group of wonderful research teams to contribute to the UK innovation and research ecosystem and governance. 🚀 Our project tackles the critical issue of business leadership and power in setting global technology #standards (e.g., AI, semiconductors, 5G and IoT). These standards are vital for driving innovation, ensuring compatibility and staying competitive globally. A big thank you to the Innovation & Research Caucus, ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council, Innovate UK and UKRI for supporting this initiative. 🔗 Announcement here: https://lnkd.in/eG_acaDP #GlobalStandards #TechnologyLeadership #UKInnovation

When states establish a strategic vision for innovation and R&D in education, they can dramatically improve student engagement and outcomes. While there are pockets of innovation across the country, strengthening the education R&D infrastructure can provide systemic solutions to the biggest challenges states are tackling. Thank you @Education Reimagined, @Transcend, and the @Alliance for Learning Innovation for their new brief on how R&D across systems can be a powerful force for modernizing education. I particularly love how this work brings together both (1) infrastructure needs for strong state R&D (e.g., modernized SLDS; technical assistance; networks) and (2) the conditions needed for strong state R&D (e.g., dedicated R&D leadership; empowered local leaders; mindset shifts). We can't realize the full potential of a state education R&D system without attending to both! https://lnkd.in/gDhHAPAc #educationresearch #innovation #edtech
