freight train through town __________________________ first the crossing bell starts making a racket as the gates go down, then you feel yourself jump when the air horn, much closer than you expected, catches you by surprise - turn and see the headlight of the lead diesel unit, coming at you head-on just before it starts to lean into the curve, count the units as they go by, one - two - three - (the rumble of the exhausts hitting you in the gut) now comes the consist, mostly boxcars of every color traffic blocked by a rolling swaying wall of steel the rail right in front of you flexing up and down under the wheels as each load passes (you can tell the empties by the sound, they rattle like garbage cans) now lots of trailers on flats, a few tall automobile racks finally the last car (shake your head at the sudden silence) turn and watch the rear-end marker light moving away from you hear the engine noise again, now distant, changing in pitch as the units start heading up the grade the other side of town
