What's a good school, in your opinion? Here's our take. A place where learning closely meets individual values; A warm community where we forgive and repair relationships if broken; A place where any mistake is just a new lesson added to a long string of experiences; A place where only time travel is impossible - at least until we find out it isn't; A place where diversity doesn't divide us but unites us; A place where each of us can be unique, where we are all authentic in being different; A place where we learn not only formulas or facts but many interesting things about the world around us and how we can live a happy and fulfilling life. In the following days, we will take you on a virtual journey and show you what a day in the life of a student at Transylvania College looks like. Until then, what makes a good school for your children? 😊

This is really cool! The "Math and the Mouse" program at Furman University engages students using mathematics and related disciplines to help make The Happiest Place on Earth, Walt Disney World, run efficiently. Projects include determining how long they expect to wait in line (The Single Rider Wait Problem), how to efficiently route themselves to ride every ride in a park (The Traveling Tourist Problem), and where to place a mobile food cart to meet changing demand throughout the day (The Mickey Bar Problem). At the Center for Creative Learning in St. Louis, I designed a "Theme Park Dynamics" curriculum for fifth graders in which students analyzed Six Flags' attraction wait times using real data on guest flow, ride capacity, and queue length to to understand and improve bottlenecks and inefficiencies and increase guest satisfaction. We also explored various interconnected systems including emergency planning, accessibility, branding, safety, transportation, and sanitation. Engaging students in tackling real-world problems and visiting authentic locations to collect and analyze data significantly increases learner engagement and fosters a deeper understanding of concepts and instills a sense of responsibility and connection to the world around them. The research tells us that having books at home stops summer learning loss AND that children in under-resourced communities have fewer books at home. ALL children deserve to have access to books and reading, and at Books Are Wings, we're working to build the libraries of young readers across Rhode Island. "Prioritizing learning as a year-round commitment, and implementing programs that support summer learning, limit summer learning loss, which in turn reduces the achievement gap." (BU Journal of Graduate Studies in Education, Volume 14, Issue 2, 2022) You can have a big impact in the life of a child this summer by supporting our Stop the Summer Slide Campaign. Give today, and help make reading a key part of every child's summer experience: https://bit.ly/3XfopGi
