What happens when you start learning something NEW? (Swedish in this case). Anyone who recognizes this pattern? 🤩 YES! A great adventure! I can do this. 😱 PAAAAANIC. I have no idea how to do this. 😉 BUT WAIT. I have learned languages before. It will work out just fine. 😰 GAAAH. I don't understand anything. I know nothing. 😧 OH NO. This is impossible. People will think I'm an idiot!. 🥰 GREAT TEACHER! I feel supported. Making mistakes is fine. They seem to believe in me. 🧠 WOW. I am actually quite smart. And I am great at learning. 🥳 LET'S DO THIS. Challenges. Obstacles. This will be fun! Unfortunately this only happens when you find a great teacher and a good learning method 😅. They can share their love for the language and make you fall in love with it as well. Which is the experience we aim to recreate in all of our courses. Making Swedish Fun to learn! Which for our Company courses, it translates to high retention. (Students keep attending our lessons instead of quitting). 😔NO PROGRESS. I am afraid of making mistakes. The explanations are now working. ☠️I QUIT. This is impossible. Questions for you: 1. How has your experience of learning Swedish been so far? 2. What was the best teacher you ever had?

Tom Earley Me and you during our Greek lessons?

My experience with SFI was abysmal and not conducive to my learning style. I’ve had a lot better luck with daily use of DuoLingo and 1:1 Swedish tutors who helped me gain confidence in speaking. I also listen to your YouTube videos Daniella! I learn a lot of practical tips from you and I enjoy your style of teaching. Very approachable and encouraging. 😊

1. I have had great support while I started with 75 hours of private lessons from Berlitz. Afterwards I continued the free courses that Sweden offers SFI and grundläggande Svenska som andraspråk in our kommun. Also the volunteers at the weekly språkfika's 🍪☕ in Lund at I'M were very kind and and useful to keep on practicing my Swedish after I finished level 4 of Grundläggande Svenska. 2. It's not easy to compare private lessons with group lessons. I learned a lot in a short time from Rasmus Sjöberg. He is an amazing teacher with a lot of humor. But I would also like to mention Lovisa Westerberg who is very dedicated to reach goals while teaching people with so many different backgrounds and Swedish levels. I think Eslöv lost one of the best teachers and Ystad must be happy to have such an amazing teacher. Learning Swedish is really worth all the effort. It opens doors to new local friends, jobs and (some will not believe me) even neighbours.

This is so true with my journey of learning Swedish! I absolutely had times I thought,”listen this is impossible” because of a teacher. Now, I am getting over it because of a very supportive teacher I found in my SFI class. ☺️

I had probably the best teacher: Life :) In other words, I got a job and started speaking more regularly. And people around me are mostly tolerant when it comes to mistakes/misunderstandings. I am mostly self-taught and I used two strategies: 1. I aimed for 1000 nouns, 1000 verbs, 1000 adjectives so that I can express myself on a (kind of) acceptable level 2. I studied context-based: I thought of different contexts, domains, situations that are relevant to me and studied words that belong in these domains

When it comes to learning Swedish, the best teachers are those you meet that don’t switch too quickly to English to make things easy (for all involved 😄). I suppose it comes down to personal effort at the end but when you live in Stockholm and everyone can talk to you in English, then it makes it harder to level up beyond the basics to get by.

Oh yes, Daniella Sjöqvist, having a great teacher is one of the prerequisites of success 🙌 I started learning Swedish for fun by just sharing with my two Swedish classmates about how my day was yesterday. The language I spoke that time was Swenglish😅 I did very well, even landed several jobs in Swedish 🙌 Yet, the next curve, when I started my business and clients asked me to deliver Cultural Intelligence and Leadership trainings in Swedish, felt too overwhelming 😬 I started doubting myself and the best thing I did at that moment was to ask for help! Forever grateful to my amazing language coach Rebecca Kågesjö - our sessions were fun, relevant and totalt meeting my goals on 200% 🙌 As Rebecca wisely puts it, Swedish language should be one of the most important benefits for employers to invest into - on the same level with health and wellbeing benefits 💪🏻

Love the graph! Unfortunately I am in the bottom half after I stopped my lessons (and I had a good teacher at the time). Good teachers make a big difference!
