On 2 and 3 March, we at Unitas, Barnet Youth Zone are partnering with the other three London Youth Zones to raise much-needed funds to support the tens of thousands of young people we work with every single year. It's called "London Without Limits". It's a match-funded campaign so all donations are DOUBLED. We did our last crowdfunder back in 2022 and it was a huge success! Why? Because an amazing community of Champions came forward to help us - they were the ones who sent out messages/emails/social media posts to ask their networks to give to support Unitas. Most of the best hospitals, crisis centers and ABA centers now reject those with the greatest need. Those with profound autism, who are often nonverbal and may suffer from various physical and psychological challenges as well as self-injurious behaviors, have been abandoned by most of these providers. Some even acknowledge that they're in violation of IDEA or ADA laws but until a lawsuit or legislative changes force their hand, none are willing or able to provide the 1:1 support that is often needed/required. Adding insult to injury, parents who are desperate and have been rejected by their schools are faced with quitting their jobs or seeking residential care. The problem with that is that most of these facilities have also abandoned those with the greatest need, as we ourselves experienced when we were rejected by 57 of 60 residential centers that were supposed to be in the business of supporting kiddos like our son--and of those 3, only one had an immediate opening, and it was nothing short of a money grab with no legislative oversight by the state of NY or the DOE. So what happens when your child with profound autism is kicked out of their public school and none of the ABA centers (which are now restricted to 3 years in light of the horrific new changes in Medicaid coverage) will take him/her? Well, they'll tell you that you can forfeit your parental rights and then the child will be able to shortcut the waiting list for residential care! Can you imagine being in a position where they're suggesting you have to forfeit your parental rights just to get help for this marginalized, vulnerable and often overlooked population that's growing exponentially year-in and year out? Sorry, that's not okay, and that's not a solution, although it's what some parents have had to do out of sheer desperation. We're better than that...and if we're not, it's about time we step up and be better. These are some of the sweetest, most lovable people you'll ever encounter, but they can also be dangerous to themselves and others, and because many can't speak--or vote--they too often get swept under the rug in favor of more feel-good-narratives like the Good Doctor. But guess what? Not everyone with autism can speak and not all are savants, which is exactly why the DSM V did such a disservice to those with profound autism by lumping everyone together without discerning the levels of need and ability. That's yet another thing that has to change...but for now, we can start with things this--bringing attention to a problem that many are unaware of unless or until it impacts their own families.
