Agree or disagree? Bragging vs. reporting in donor communications... For profits can more easily get away with bragging. Nonprofits can't. I believe there is a subtle difference between reporting on how you used donor gifts so your supporters gain value from their giving experience... and bragging (which diminishes the value they perceive). The simplest way to know which one you’re trending toward is to compare your usage of first-person verses second-person pronouns. Count of the usage of ‘I’ and ‘we’ in your donor communications, and compare it to ‘you’ and ‘your’. If the first-person language is dominating, you are bragging.

Ten ways to supercharge your year-end fundraising, Day Five Segment your list! I cannot stress this enough: If you have information about a donor or prospect, segment them into similar groups based on your organization’s issue areas. This is a really easy and basic way to group constituents and offer them customized messages that address them more directly. You can use constituency or tagging functionality in your database to group people. Some questions to consider: Is there one area of your organization that they are drawn to? Did they attend an event? Are they a SYBUNT/LYBUNT (Some or Last Year But Unfortunately Not This) donor? Segment them into groups and create messages for each. Want more? I strongly believe that ActBlue has played an integral role in democratizing Democratic fundraising. However, with great power comes great responsibility. The digital fundraising space has become tainted with bad players damaging the efforts of hard-working progressive organizations. Actblue has already taken action to protect donors, but they can do more to foster a healthy and ethical progressive fundraising ecosystem.

I just signed onto an open letter to ActBlue (spearheaded by Josh Nelson) on steps the company can take to protect donors, curb grifting, and incentivize more ethical behavior in the Democratic online fundraising space.
