Focusing on the Final Stretch of My PhD Upgrade Despite being quite unwell the past few days, I am working towards a big exam. I’m in the final stretch of my PhD upgrade to becoming a PhD Candidate at UCL UCL SSEES and it’s been an intense but rewarding journey so far. Balancing research, writing, and refining ideas has truly tested my discipline and focus. As well as on top of being s full time practiconer working in public policy within the UK Civil Service. As I push forward, I’m reminded of a few key lessons that have helped me stay grounded: 1️⃣ Clarity is Key Whether it’s your research questions or your goals for the day, clear focus simplifies the process. 2️⃣ Small Wins Matter Celebrate progress, even if it’s just writing a paragraph or resolving a minor issue in your work. 3️⃣ Ask for Help Feedback and support from supervisors and peers can make all the difference in moments of uncertainty. Here’s to the final push! If you’re in a similar boat, remember: stay focused, stay resilient, and take it one step at a time. Would love to hear your tips for staying motivated during major milestones! 📸 Snap from sunnier autumn times last year in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina 🇧🇦 . On that trip I ended up presenting to our research group of current PhD students! #PhDLife #AcademicJourney #PhDUpgrade #Focus #Resilience #ResearchGoals #Bosnia #JessTravels

Sectoral diversity: where is it taking us and our students? Professor Kerri-Lee Krause PhD, GAICD, PFHEA, FSRHE will be on the esteemed panel discussing this question #HEDx #FutureSolutions2024 on October 31. Will you join us?
Universities are having a tough time. Why start a new one? Are there better ways of serving learners needs? Professor Kerri-Lee Krause PhD, GAICD, PFHEA, FSRHE started the last new Australian university in Avondale University from where she graduated some years earlier. She quotes TS Elliott as not ceasing from exploration and returning to where she started to know the place for the first time. With Griffith University Victoria University La Trobe University and University of Melbourne along the way, she now chairs HESP advising on HE standards. She sees, more than anyone, that universities, and other HE and VET providers are a networked community to meet future learners needs. Listen to a fascinating interview with Professor Christy Collis of HERDSA Higher Education Research Society of Australasia and I ahead of them both joining HEDx on stage at UQ in October. And develop your literacy about sector ecology and how it needs protecting to deliver for learners. After all, aren’t they the only people that matter?

Liquid gold, shared by James Clear Economics professor Tyler Cowen on raising the aspirations of others: "Yesterday I had lunch with a former Ph.D student of mine, who is now highly successful and tenured at a very good school. I was reminded that, over twenty years ago, I was Graduate Director of Admissions. One of my favorite strategies was to take strong candidates who applied for Masters and also offer them Ph.D admissions, suggesting they might to do the latter. My lunch partner was a beneficiary of this de facto policy. At least two of our very best students went down this route... neither realized that it was common simply to apply straight to a Ph.D program, skipping over the Masters. I believe this is now better known, but the point is this. At critical moments in time, you can raise the aspirations of other people significantly, especially when they are relatively young, simply by suggesting they do something better or more ambitious than what they might have in mind. It costs you relatively little to do this, but the benefit to them, and to the broader world, may be enormous. This is in fact one of the most valuable things you can do with your time and with your life." #dogood #begood #thinkgood #changelives #keepshining

shared: Graduate assistantships involve working with a professor for up to 20 hours a week during the two 16 week semesters. Two types of tasks will be assigned to the GAs: Teaching assistantship (TA) work involves tasks related to the teaching undergraduate or graduate classes; work is assigned by a department professor. These courses are selected based on their enrollments and may include lower and/or upper division courses. Research assistantship (RA) work involves tasks related to research projects undertaken by the assigned professor. Graduate Fellowships The Department of Economics greatly appreciates the contributions of the Ethel C. Chapman Trust and others to the John J. and Ethel C. Chapman Fellowship. Two (2) $10,000 John J. and Ethel C. Chapman Graduate Economics Fellowships will be awarded annually. These fellowships do not have work commitment. A Chapman Fellow must: have a GPA of 3.5 be a full-time graduate student (enrolled in 9 graduate credits per semester unless otherwise determined under Boise State University policy) Chapman Fellowships may be renewed if recommended by the Department of Economics. Students have to apply for the Fellowships through the Boise State Scholarship Application system. Deadlines vary but the majority of the scholarships have a deadline of February 15 (deadline for funding consideration extended to May 10). Out-of-state applicants interested in a Chapman Fellowship should also apply for the GEM scholarship, a merit-based scholarship program that covers tuition. https://lnkd.in/g2CXYGDZ https://lnkd.in/g4_9U-wH

These bills and subsequent actions taken are harmful to our students and ultimately democracy. WV followed today with EOs banning DEI. NAACP is fighting anti-DEI policy in AL. There are concrete tactics to consider in higher education. We have some of those tactics at Education for All and are putting together more for a series forthcoming. https://lnkd.in/ekJQYuPW
