Today, 16 #NGOs have sent a letter to President Ursula von der Leyen to express their serious concerns about a recommendation in the recently published #MarioDraghi report on the Future of European Competitiveness that the EU should "carefully explore the potential of environmentally-sustainable deep sea mining." In this part of the report, the #EUcommission is ill-advised: Deep-sea mining will not help us tackle the #ClimateCrisis, it will eventually exacerbate it. Also nothing about #DeepSeaMining is "environmentally-sustainable". Alternatives to #DeepSeaMining exist. Mine waste is a legacy nobody wants to inherit. By combining remining waste with restoration, we can provide responsibly sourced materials, help fund habitat restoration and bring new life to communities. We’re working hard to give retired mines a second chance: We're reviewing 70+ sites around the world for remining and restoration. We have 5 now under final assessment. And at 3 locations, restoration planning is already underway. That’s on top of our Salmon Gold sites, which are already delivering nature-positive gold and restoring critical fish habitat. Ioneer’s Rhyolite Ridge Project has cleared a major U.S. permitting step with the announcement today of the Final Environmental Impact Statement, marking a crucial step toward construction. In addition, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has released a biological opinion that concludes the Rhyolite Ridge Project will not jeopardise the ESA-listed Tiehm’s buckwheat or adversely modify its critical habitat. Very proud that at Ocean Born Foundation we studied the arguments on both sides of deep sea mining early on and reached the unequivocal conclusion that deep-sea mining can only be highly destructive on the deep-sea environment, marine food webs, and the carbon cycle, which is what allows all life on our blue planet to exist. Thankful to be in this 15 NGO strong coalition that has signed a letter to the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen to express our alarm about the recommendation to explore “environmentally-sustainable deep sea mining” in the recent Mario Draghi report. More extraction, more mining cannot be sustainable and cannot improve the health of the biosphere. However, progressing innovation to for example adopt a model of circularity, new battery technologies, and improved recycling systems, are ways we can fight climate change. With a goal to protect 30% of lands and waters by 2030, they're ensuring iconic areas like the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wildnerness remain protected for future generations. #DidYouKnow what are the environmental issues with sand? Organized crime is mining sand from rivers and coasts to feed demand worldwide, ruining ecosystems and communities. Can it be stopped? I think it's one of the most understudied global challenges of the 21st century 🌏 Sand mining from rivers and marine ecosystems can lead to erosion, salination of aquifers, loss of protection against storm surges and impacts on biodiversity, which pose a threat to livelihoods through, among other things, water supply, food production, fisheries, or to the tourism industry. I think that when you talk about sand trafficking, most people would not believe it. Very few people are looking closely at the illegal sand system or calling for changes, however, because sand is a mundane resource. Yet sand mining is the world's largest extraction industry because sand is a main ingredient in concrete, and the global construction industry has been soaring for decades. Every year the world uses up to 50 billion metric tons of sand, according to a United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) report. The time is running out for sand. We are thrilled that our Pro Bono initiative, TIL+, has a project on TV! 📺 This viz for Grand Canyon Trust has made it to CBS News and has also been featured on the Grand Canyon Trust website. ➡️https://lnkd.in/ebr_gq-y Thanks to Tyler Ha, Luke Bennett and Cecily Santiago our amazing consultants. Grand Canyon Trust (GCT), a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the Grand Canyon and its ecosystems. GCT collaborates with local Native tribes and works to protect the region from industrial threats like mining. The goal was to create an infographic dashboard that raises awareness about the environmental impacts of uranium mining near the Grand Canyon, focusing on water quality. Key findings revealed that mine wastewater contains high levels of uranium, arsenic, and lead, and significant amounts of water are extracted in this arid region, raising concerns about the uncertain impact on the Coconino aquifer due to data limitations. "I also think understanding the audience was really helpful for this project and thinking of ways to relate unintuitive numbers/data for the general public - I think this was why our comparisons to the safe drinking amount, the water droplets, and relating the water pumped to how many people that could serve, etc. were very effective." - Luke Bennett, The Information Lab US. #GrandCanyonTrust #Conservation #Nonprofit #Infographic #DataVisualization
