The pediatric mental health crisis is not just about children. 💙 Families operate as systems, with child well being directly impacting caregiver well being and vice versa. That means that when children struggle, so do their parents in real, measurable, and consequential ways. We are thrilled to share our latest ebook, which provides a much-needed perspective on the interaction between child mental health and caregiver work-life revealing the role Mightier plays in improving caregivers’ work experience. #PersonalDevelopment Are you one of the 1,000,000 Australians trained as a Mental Health First Aider? It's an important role within our organisations; for peer support, for early intervention, and for confidence in approaching someone in a supportive way when they're struggling. Are you finding it hard to make it work for you? I get it! A two day training session is pretty intensive, and doesn't resolve the confidence or comfort problem you now face talking to someone about their mental health. We've got you! Coming to the zoom room, we are holding a Community of Practise (an 's' in practise as we're in Australia!!! God I'm confused!). I'm there to guide conversations, bring up to date data to the table, and give you the opportunities to practise conversations with others in a safe space. Come and join us, the details are below! #MHFA #MentalHealthAwareness #leadershipdevelopment
We are so excited to announce that our first Community of Practise for all accredited Mental Health First Aid Officers is now open for bookings! Our first session will be run on 1st March 2024 at 12noon (AEST) on zoom. Click the link in the comments to book. These sessions will be run bi-monthly. Julie Gillespie will be leading discussions, updating relevant data points, and ensuring you have the resources you need to support those that you care about. If you would like an organisation dedicated session, please send us a message.

Hot off the press from the Centers for Disease Control – Promoting Mental Health and Well-being in Schools: “Schools are prioritizing students’ mental health, and there are many tools and resources to choose from. CDC created this action guide as a place to start. It can help school and district leaders build on what they are already doing to promote students’ mental health and find new strategies to fill in gaps. The action guide describes six in-school strategies that are proven to promote and support mental health and well-being. For each strategy, the guide also describes approaches, or specific ways to put the strategy into action, and examples of evidence-based policies, programs, and practices.”

From the International Society for the Study of Self Injury For parents, finding out that your child engaging in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) can be very difficult. Here are three tips from our 2023 ISSS Invited Fellow, Dr. Nancy Heath, on how parents can help: 1) DO NOT ignore the problem. Self-injury is most often a sign of distress and may indicate mental health difficulties. Although it is tempting to see it as a “fad” or “stage” it is not in your child's best interests to do so. 2) Remember that you want to build trust with your child during initial conversations. You and your family can play an important role in supporting your child as they work to learn healthier ways to cope. 3) Listen to what your child says and how they feel. As parents we find listening to our children’s pain difficult so we try to problem solve or suggest a more positive viewpoint. This can feel like “not listening” to our children. We need to listen WITHOUT trying to correct, problem solve or suggest, just confirming with them what we are hearing. For more information on how you can support your child, visit the ISSS resource page (https://lnkd.in/gneXdhRC) which contains links to podcasts, books, educational pages, advocacy pages, and other online support!

Today, we launch our #WouldYouKnowWhatToSay campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the potentially life-saving power of mental health first aid skills and conversations. At the centre of the campaign is a celebration of our Mental Health First Aiders, and the skills that they bring to their workplaces, schools or communities. Through their stories of connection and conversation, we hear about the impact their role as an MHFAider has had both on them, and the lives of those around them. More than 1.3 million Australians have been trained in Mental Health First Aid — and we’re only just getting started. We know that having a conversation may save a life, and it is our goal to see millions more equipped with the crucial skills to know how. To help us keep the conversation going, our national network of Mental Health First Aiders and MHFA Instructors are sharing stories of what Mental Health First Aid means to them. Check out these hashtags to read their messages: #WouldYouKnowWhatToSay, #IAmAMentalHealthFirstAider, #IAmAnMHFAInstructor. Explore our campaign page, help us spread the word, and together we can create a world where everyone has the skills to support people experiencing mental health problems. https://lnkd.in/dceWVvC7
