This is so true. I was recently in the category of the second half of this statement. As I was beginning my transition from the United States Marine Corps, I was terrified. My pay would be basically cut in half initially, I had no idea what I wanted to (or could) do post service, and I had a family to take care of that is about to grow by one right after retirement. It was crippling and I was in a deep depression for a while there. The problem was that I was so focused on everything that could go wrong and fail that I didn’t see all of the possibilities in front of me. However, after my experience with Vistage Worldwide, Inc., speaking to the amazing CEOs, Presidents, and overall high level business leaders within San Diego County, I had something I didn’t expect to get….hope. This experience coupled with my amazingly insightful time with the Marine Executive Association at their Trasintion Assistance Seminar showed me that I actually had a lot of assets that I bring to the civilian job market. Through my experience I have gained a stronger ability to control my anxiety and fear, grab hold of these feelings and manipulate them into excitement, hope, and motivation.
