I'm thrilled to share some insights from my recent project, "Home Automation," where I tackled the challenges of designing a high-voltage PCB to prevent arcing, especially for handling lightning strikes. High-voltage applications demand meticulous design and attention to detail to ensure safety, reliability, and performance. Key Design Strategies I Implemented: 1. Clearance and Creepage Distance: Ensured adequate spacing between conductors based on IPC-2221 and IEC 60950-1 standards to prevent electrical arcing. 2. Material Selection: Used high-dielectric materials like polyimide for better insulation properties. 3. Conformal Coating: Applied silicone conformal coating for superior moisture and UV protection, ideal for high-temperature environments. 4. Trace Design: Opted for wider traces with rounded corners to minimize electric field concentration. 5. Isolation Slots and Guard Rings: Incorporated isolation slots and guard rings to increase creepage distance and contain electric fields effectively. 💡 Why This Matters: Designing for high-voltage applications is critical in fields such as home automation, power electronics, and industrial systems. In the case of our Home Automation project, ensuring robust protection against lightning-induced surges is paramount.
