Is this science fiction? 🌌 SpaceX has achieved another incredible milestone with its Starship vehicle's successful fifth test flight. What makes this launch remarkable is the spacecraft reaching space and the safe return and upright "catch" of the booster portion. This is an excellent achievement towards SpaceX's ambitions for commercial spaceflight service. The ultimate objective is to make the rocket fully reusable, significantly cutting launch costs and enabling frequent space travel. This progress is crucial as SpaceX works towards fulfilling its $4 billion contract with NASA to land astronauts on the moon. This breakthrough feels like a revolutionary step in space exploration, akin to transitioning from a horse to a car. A reusable rocket was once considered a far-off dream; imagine a future where interplanetary travel and rapid Earth-to-Earth flights become the norm, potentially cutting travel times between distant locations (such as Brazil to Japan) to just a few minutes. In space exploration, the sky is no longer the limit—it’s just the beginning. #SpaceX #Innovation #Space

SpaceX has completed a mostly successful 4th test of its revolutionary new #Starship rocket, a key step toward returning humans to the Moon and, maybe one day, landing on Mars. The flight, integrated flight test 4 (IFT-4), lifted off today from SpaceX’s Boca Chica test site in #Texas at 7:50 am Central time. Standing 71 meters tall, the rocket and its 33 methane-fueled #Raptor engines roared to life, raising #Starship—the largest rocket in history—into the sky over the Gulf of Mexico from the test site, called Starbase. Although one of the engines failed (#Starship is designed with redundancy in mind in case of engine failures), the rocket’s journey to space passed smoothly. This was the third time a Starship vehicle had reached space and the second time it had reached suborbit, the other being the last test flight, IFT-3, in March. #Starship is composed of two parts, a lower section known as the #SuperHeavy #booster and the upper section, #Starship itself, which will one day house as many as 100 humans on trips to the moon and Mars. Three minutes into today’s flight, at an altitude of about 78 kilometers, the two sections #separated as planned, with #SuperHeavy then beginning its journey back to Earth. https://lnkd.in/dDP5UGrm

Mostly an elaborate project management exercise in combination with a logistics train which sees monthly arrivals of kit, vittles, water, air, Doritos, et al., which isn't much different than ancient long distance sea voyages. Some came back, some didn't. Expect these sailors to skew heavily towards doctors and nurses in the beginning as emergency monkey repair facilities are likely to be a top priority when monkeys arrive. Expect robot like things, the term itself is dicey after a century of marketing manipulation, to perform a bunch of tasks after being told to by their disgruntled master operators in Tejas. Part of me hopes the first thing they build in their free time is a mini-Alamo with Ozzy Osbourne peeing against it. Ozzy, 'First Rock God On Mars'. There should be a GoFundMe site for that as some doodied-up off-the-shelf kit is likely to be able to 3D print such a thing on Mars.
SpaceX's Starship megarocket will start flying Mars missions just two years from now, if all goes according to plan. “These will be uncrewed to test the reliability of landing intact on Mars. If those landings go well, then the first crewed flights to Mars will be in 4 years," SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk said via X on Saturday evening (Sept. 7), in a post that announced the bold new target timelines. (Earth and Mars align properly for interplanetary missions once every 26 months.) "Flight rate will grow exponentially from there, with the goal of building a self-sustaining city in about 20 years," Musk added in the same post. "Being multiplanetary will vastly increase the probable lifespan of consciousness, as we will no longer have all our eggs, literally and metabolically, on one planet." The stainless-steel Starship consists of two elements: a first-stage booster called Super Heavy and a 165-foot-tall (50 meters) upper-stage spacecraft known as Starship. A stacked Starship is the biggest and most powerful rocket ever built. It stands about 400 feet (122 meters) tall and generates 16.7 million pounds of thrust at liftoff — nearly twice that of the Space Launch System (SLS), the rocket for NASA's Artemis moon program. SLS is expendable, but Starship is designed to be fully and rapidly reusable. Indeed, SpaceX plans to land Super Heavy back on the launch mount after each liftoff, enabling quick inspection, refurbishment and relaunch. SpaceX believes that Starship's combination of brawn and efficiency will finally bring Mars settlement — a long-held dream of Musk's — within humanity's grasp. #Mars #SpaceX #Starship SpaceX's Starship rocket launches on its fourth fully integrated test flight, on June 6, 2024.
