Netflix Builds a ‘Squid Game’ Universe as It Awaits a Second Season. #nytimes Netflix announced eralier this week that it would unveil its latest live experience, based on the dystopian hit show in which desperate South Koreans competed in a brutal contest of simple schoolyard games for a prize of 45.6 billion won (around $38 million). Winners moved closer to the money. Losers died. The live attraction mimics both the popular iconography of the series — the massive piggy bank filled with cash, a giant animatronic doll named Young-hee, the sterile white dormitory — and the childish games. For $30, fans of “Squid Game” will compete in some 70 minutes of play, with moral twists and turns and six group activities, including the schoolyard race Red Light, Green Light and a nonlethal version of the series’ terrifying Glass Bridge challenge, which forced contestants to choose between two clear squares for each step across a bridge. If they chose incorrectly, they descended hundreds of feet to their death. To feel even more like a character on the show, customers can buy a tracksuit for $50 and wear it during the experience. There is also a $100 V.I.P. ticket option: In a nod to the original, you can watch the unfortunate masses compete in the games while you sip cocktails in a swanky lounge. “It’s all the fun without the death,” said Greg Lombardo, Netflix’s head of live experiences. “I’d say in general when you have I.P., if you just do too much of something, that can dilute what it is,” Netflix’s chief content officer, Bela Bajaria, said in an interview. “The other thing we look at is, are you being true to the DNA of the show and why people loved it but expanding that connection?” Also coming soon is a video game in which players will be able to compete with characters from the series. A virtual reality game is already available, and in Brazil, Burger King has been offering “Squid Game”-themed food combos in four cities. Netflix is facing the biggest leak-based crisis in its history after a huge data breach resulted in numerous unreleased shows and movies appearing online. As reported by What's on Netflix and IGN, the streaming giant has spent the past two days (August 7 and 8) scrambling to respond to the massive security breach that's seen a number of anticipated projects leak online. Among the productions affected are critically-acclaimed shows like Arcane and Heartstopper, while there are unsubstantiated reports that Stranger Things has also been impacted. It's not known how many new Netflix movies and TV shows have been affected by the breach, but Netflix is moving quickly to hunt down sources hosting the leaked material and scrub them from the internet. In a statement issued to The Wrap, Netflix revealed the breach was the result of one of its post-production partners being targeted. The world's best streaming service didn't mince its words over how "aggressively" it would pursue those responsible for the digital attack, either. "One of our post-production partners has been compromised and footage from several of our titles has unfortunately leaked online," a Netflix spokesperson told The Wrap last night (August 8). "Our team is aggressively taking action to have it taken down." Which Netflix shows and movies have leaked online? The next installments in each series – Heartstopper season 3 and Arcane season 2 – aren't due out on Netflix until October 3 and sometime in November, but some viewers have already been given a good look at what each chapter's stories will entail following the data leak. Per IGN and What's on Netflix again, full (albeit unfinished) episodes of Arcane and Heartstopper's upcoming seasons are circulating online. Episodes are believed to be stamped with "for internal use" and "property of Netflix" watermarks, and don't come with completed visual and sound effects. Sunday marked five years since #GameofThrones ended with a polarizing finale. At my Substack, I wrote about the show’s legacy and how popular it still is, and how that’s partly given rise to IP TV. #HBO wouldn’t be investing so heavily in the Thrones-verse if it didn’t sense demand, and demand is still high, according to Parrot Analytics. That’s why it’s not just HBO that’s been trying to replicate its success; a bevy of fantasy TV shows came out of the woodwork in its aftermath, none of which have seemed to capture the zeitgeist in quite the same way. Instead, the best way to find a Game of Thrones-like genre hit probably isn’t another big fantasy drama. Fallout, based on the game franchise of the same name, scored nearly 3 billion viewing minutes in the US in its first five days, according to Nielsen. It also reflects a greater trend happening in TV (aside from the larger crossover of gaming and Hollywood): tons of IP, something that has more so been a hallmark of the movie industry over the last decade-plus, and is probably a big part of the Thrones legacy.
