This TedX talk by the inspiring Alexandra really resonates with me. While the issue of underrepresentation of women in engineering is significant, I rarely talk negatively about the "lack" of women currently in the sector. Ironically, my commitment to encouraging more girls to pursue STEM careers, actually lies with me never directly addressing gender at all in front of children. Instead, I aim to connect with children from as young as possible, acting as a visible female role model in the STEM field. It’s vital for young girls, but also young boys too, to see women in these roles. If we as an industry can make this happen, future generations will grow up less affected by the gender biases present in STEM careers today. #rolemodels #WomenInEngineering #WomenInSTEM #DiversityInSTEM #STEMOutreach

Conversations about diversity in STEM often centre around a “scarcity mindset” – a focus on the lack of diversity - leading to a lack of diverse role models to inspire the next generation - and so the cycle continues… ⁉️ But the truth is we already have an incredible pool of diverse STEM professionals!!! The key is getting more people involved in meaningful education outreach engagements to amplify these voices. With #BritishScienceWeek (7 - 16 March 2025) coming up - NOW is the perfect time to ACT. Young people need to see people they can relate to thriving in STEM. This needs everyone - no matter who you are you can showcase diversity in STEM through yourself and the examples you talk about, videos or pictures you show. There are so many ways you can get involved - Go through your local STEM Ambassadors hub, offer to go into your local school, join up with colleagues and invite a school for a visit to your workplace, join your organisation’s or institution’s outreach activities for #BSW, work with one of the many incredible organisations who are experts at this - Stemettes, Association for Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers (AFBE-UK), STEMunity, Primary Engineer, Tech She Can, EngineeringUK, Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), STEM Learning UK - to name just a few!! We will be having a new cohort of #rolemodels starting on their STEMAZING journey in March!! ❤️ I cant wait to see what impact they will make 🌟 By stepping up, you’re helping to reshape perceptions of what a scientist, technologist, engineer, or mathematician looks like. Let’s stop waiting for someone else to take the lead. We are all the role models we’ve been waiting for. It’s time to show up, share our stories, and help young people see that STEM is for everyone. 🌟 STEM Week: The Event I Owed Myself to Write About 🌟 Confession time: This happened a few months back, and I finally got around to writing about it. They say good things take time, right? (Or maybe I was just too busy basking in the afterglow of a successful event!) 😅 During STEM Week, I hosted an online STEM talk for my class and invited three of my amazing friends—each a trailblazer in their own right: ✅ A medical doctor who gave us a behind-the-scenes peek into the operating theater. (Spoiler: it’s not like Grey’s Anatomy, but just as fascinating!) ✅ An architect who walked us through the magic of turning blueprints into buildings. ✅ The PhD student/content creator shared their dual role, inspiring students with how scientific research can be creatively communicated to the world. It was a blast watching my students light up with curiosity and bombard the speakers with questions. They didn’t just learn about jobs; they saw real people turning their passions into careers. From operating rooms to design studios and lab-to-lens storytelling, STEM came alive that day. Why am I sharing this now? Because it’s a reminder to all of us: inspiration has no expiry date. Organizing that talk may have happened months ago, but the impact? That lasts a lifetime—both for my students and for me. I’M SUCH A SHORTY‼️😩 Besides being on site this week, I am proud to also support my very own daughter with her college interview for #engineering. In this household, we love to break stereotypes! We also love STEM. I raised my girls to believe that they can do anything and then I lead by example. - Single mum raising STEM Girls, I AM THEIR MENTOR This week I am also doing STEM Ambassadors work supporting year 13s at an all-boy school for mock interviews. Over the years I have not only guided my own, I have been able to support and speak to children of all ages and backgrounds about STEM careers, guide them and help support their career decision. I've forged relationships with schools including primary over the years and I look to continue to inspire young people. The last few years I’ve been proud to be able to focus on representation within the industry. Especially, convincing more girls to enter the industry and speaking to those from urban areas. Like I always say, this will no longer be our world to build and create and soon it will be time to pass the torch. When we empower girls and students to explore STEM, the ripple effects are profound. We’re not just creating more engineers, scientists, or tech innovators—we’re fostering a generation of problem-solvers ready to tackle the world’s biggest challenges. To all STEM enthusiasts out there: never underestimate the power of your words and actions. Whether you’re encouraging a curious child or organising a workshop, every effort counts. Together, we can build a future where STEM is a space for everyone to thrive.
