Every year rankings like these come out and folks celebrate, or feel despair, and educators and policy works often create brand new (untested) systems. What would the 24/25 rankings look like if the NYDOE and NY schools spent significant time collaborating with and learning from Massachusetts, Connecticut and Maryland? This paradigm is too familiar. Schools operate and compete in districts and states, but how often do they work to partner together and share best practices? Almost never--in part because funding, through enrollment, is tied to these scores. But what impact would it have on students of schools refused to be in silos and instead opened doors and thinking?

You can’t tell me it’s impossible to change the way we do school when there are bright spots all around us. I recently spent an academic year exploring innovative educational models around the world and was thrilled to see my collaborators at Second Peninsula, LLC doing the same at home. The result is their new PBS / Brief But Spectacular series that shines a light on some seriously innovative approaches to school that are well underway. The series, which features six pioneering institutions, shows us all just how much is possible when we give kids:   ✨ Responsibility- building a culture of entrepreneurship and ownership over learning.   ✨ Opportunity- providing tools and tech, but thinking beyond proficiency to bigger possibilities.    ✨ Community- forging meaningful social, emotional connections that help students map their minds and hearts and embrace identity.   ✨ Flexibility- making space for the self-designed paths that uncover purpose.   Educators, parents, policy makers, thinkers, fellow dreamers and doers, I encourage you all to watch and share.
