#FutureFriday: dear ChatGPT, what can you do to assist #surgeons? In the coming years it is expected that the role of #artificialintelligence in #surgery will also increase. This recent publication by Ace St John et al. in The American Surgeon (2023) investigated the perspectives of #surgicalresidents on integrating AI in medicine and training. (https://lnkd.in/e3rWs57c) The authors used a survey to review the residents' vision on initial integration of AI, AI replacing human surgeons and stance on the utilization of AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT) in medical education, research, and patient documentation. Interesting results: - 81% of surgical residents believed that AI would never replace human surgeons 🤖 👨⚕️ - the use of AI for repetitive tasks in the workplace was met with a positive response (71% expressed some level of excitement) 🎉 - 43% agreed and 37% strongly agreed that AI be used to assist residents in learning operative skills 🔪 The authors conclude that they found an overall #positiveattitude toward AI and its potential to improve #surgicalskills and deepen #medicalknowledge was recognized. As well as enhancing surgical education, diagnostics, protocol development, quality assurance, and medication management, but leaving the final decision-making authority with health care professionals... Two other recent publications that evaluated the potential of AI in surgery: - A review article by Daniel Hashimoto et al. (Annals of Surgery 2018) describing the background and it's implications for surgeons; "Technology-based dissemination of surgical practice can empower every surgeon with the ability to improve the quality of global surgical care." https://lnkd.in/e3rWs57c - A surgical perspective by Wardah Rafaqat et al. (Annals of Surgery 2023) describing the potential risks of AI, like ChatGPT; "Despite the potential rewards of reduced physician burden offered by ChatGPT, our field is a high-hazard and a high-stake one, and we cannot afford such a price; the risk for inaccurate information remains high." https://lnkd.in/eXhM8nZd So, even though #AI could be an interesting tool for surgeons and #surgicalcare in the #future, we should be cautious for which ends we use it and be aware of the limitations it (still) has ChatGPT Marlies Schijven Professor Shafi Ahmed Huib A. Heel interessant, ook voor andere vakgebieden. Ook opvallend dat AI ogenblikkelijk ‘to be a surgeon’ associeert met ‘long hours’.
