🐺 Wolves are native inhabitants of our land and coexistence with them is possible! While a lot of political attention is given to wolf-livestock conflicts, one fact is often missing in the debate - we already have effective tools to prevent them. "If everyone provided a minimum level of livestock protection, the wolf would learn that livestock is not easy prey and focus on other species," says German farmer Swen Keller in his testimony on implementing preventive measures to achieve coexistence: https://lnkd.in/eXZRwxsB ✅ To ensure coexistence, EU Member States must support farmers with preventive measures (e.g. installing electric fences or acquiring guard dogs) to protect their livestock. Shooting wolves is an ineffective solution to this challenge. Let's turn to the solutions that truly support affected communities. If only there was a simpler way to restore #coastalwetlands…but wait, there is! We are trialling the exclusion of livestock (e.g. 🐮) and introduced hard-hoofed mammals (e.g. 🐷) through fencing as an efficient and cost-effective method for restoring coastal wetlands across Australia. We are quantifying opportunities across each State and assessing the feasibility of using exclusion to achieve marketable blue carbon and other ecosystem service benefits. Livestock and other hard-hoofed mammals can damage vegetation and increase carbon emissions from wetland soils. If we #removethehooves, we can facilitate passive regeneration of wetland vegetation and improve the quality of wetland environments for people and nature.
