To say the Shift Up Summit was a success would be an understatement. The meaningful discussions that took place on quantifying cyber risk, optimizing cyber spending, and meeting regulatory compliance all provided actionable insights that our peers and colleagues can and will undoubtedly take back to their organizations and begin implementing. The Shift Up revolution arrived just in time, at a point in which corporations could no longer afford to keep cybersecurity matters and the CISO relegated within siloed departments, having little influence on the broader business strategy. Cyber risk is business risk. The sooner organizations can start thinking about cybersecurity matters in broader business terms, the more secure and stable our global market will be. Karen Worstell, MA, MS wrote a fantastic article the other day! This is part of a longer conversation that I have the privilege of having with her and some other great people behind the scenes. I won't steal her thunder. You must read the article. Something related is a future conversation about the duty of care for cybersecurity. Board directors, c-suite leaders, and tech and cyber executives all have a duty to contribute to the solution. It is not solely the responsibility of a single person or function. The organizational hierarchy in NIST SP 800-39 provides a good starting point. The legal obligation associated with the duty of care is important. I think that people overlook the requirement for being properly educated and competent. That is related, but not the root of the duty. Stay tuned for the results of more collaboration between me, Karen, Malcolm Harkins, Caroline Wong and Laz . Despite the challenging Chicago weather, the Aqueity team had a fantastic time at the Portfolio Summits Midwest RIA Summit! 🎤 Michael M took the stage as a panelist, discussing the current cybersecurity landscape and the unique challenges faced by RIAs. Key takeaways: ✔️Cybersecurity is a top risk for all organizations, including RIAs and wealth managers, with a primary risk being their own personnel. ✔️Clients are sensitive about the security of their data in this high-risk environment. ✔️From cyberinsurance renewal requirements to adhering to compliance regulations (FINRA, SEC etc.), all of the fine print puts a lot of obligations on RIAs. ✔️As more operations move to the cloud, there is risk of people becoming complacent about the security of the environment. Michael emphasized the responsibility that comes with handling data, stating, "Do you really know when someone hands you data, the risk that you have and responsibility that you have to protect that?"
