As my summer internship at M-Labs wraps up, I’m overjoyed to share that my teammates Zeshan Haider, Aleena Zahra, and I have just completed our 3D game project for Pakistan's largest game jam! This was our first adventure into game development with Unity, and what a journey it has been! Our game takes players through 5 thrilling levels, packed with obstacles and choices. The mission? Build a spaceship to help an astronaut navigate challenges and make it back home to Earth. We’ve included some great features to enhance the player experience. The game allows players to mute sound and music if they prefer a quieter experience. 🎶 Plus, there’s a user-friendly menu where players can jump to any level, start from the beginning, or exit the game with ease. We put a lot of thought into the Game UI, focusing on a user-friendly experience by keeping it simple and intuitive. We used clear icons, a consistent color scheme, and a clean layout to guide players effortlessly through the game. To add a bit of sparkle, we incorporated animations into the UI, making interactions lively and engaging. The background music and sound effects we added brought the game to life, creating an immersive atmosphere for each level. When it comes to design, we took special care in crafting the environments for each level. From vibrant alien landscapes to unique visual details, every stage is designed to make players feel like they’re exploring a new and exciting world. Venturing into Unity for the first time, I learned a lot about game development—from the basics to more advanced techniques. It’s been both challenging and exhilarating, and working with such talented teammates has made the experience even more rewarding. A huge thanks to Zeshan Haider and Aleena Zahra for their hard work and creativity. 🙌 I couldn’t have made this game without them. One of my first projects of my internship at Euphoria XR, was a Hyper Casual game where players collect food items. Each food item has a point value, and players need to collect them in ascending order of points. I worked on spawning food items dynamically in a grid layout, ensuring the lower point items are easier to access. I also developed a system where players lose half of their collected points if they collide with obstacles, adding a strategic challenge to the game. Additionally, I implemented a scoring system that updates in real-time, giving players immediate feedback on their progress. I learned about managing game state, handling collisions, and integrating user input for smooth gameplay. Had an insightful session with Rahul Hasija today! As my fellow interns and I at Moodforest make progress on our Bio-happiness game concepts, these learning sessions with experienced game designers are excellent sources of inspiration. Rahul shared some of his creations and gave us insight into his design process. We discussed how the game design process begins with defining an intention— is it to inspire? Entertain? Evoke emotion? This sparked a discussion among the interns about the intention behind our own concepts. I was also struck by his comment on the power of 'bias.' By examining our internal biases and preconceived notions, we can use them to fuel the ideation for our games. He also talked about the element of randomness in game design. When skill-based gameplay joins with the element of luck and chance, it creates a memorable experience for the players. With these key takeaways, we were left with plenty of food for thought for our game design journeys—what is our intention, and how do we leverage the power of bias to create something truly powerful yet enjoyable?
