Today, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jack Chellman, Chief Project Officer at the Global Returns Project—a philanthropic charity dedicated to supporting global climate change charities and collaborating with financial organizations. As a manager of the CFA UK Sustainability Community for over a year, I’ve engaged in many insightful discussions with UK and European asset managers, asset owners, financial advisers, and banks. A great deal of thought is given to the rate of return from #SustainableInvesting and #ResponsibleInvesting. However, one concept that rarely comes up is the role of #Philanthropy in addressing climate challenges. It’s understandable—investors have a fiduciary duty, and their focus is naturally on generating returns. But as Jack shared today, not everything is investable. Some of the most pressing environmental challenges we face simply won’t yield financial returns, yet they are critical to our planet’s future. This raises an important point: #philanthropicdonations can play a key role in building a sustainable future where investments alone may fall short. There’s immense potential in aligning philanthropic efforts with the broader mission of creating a better world.
