“Waste pickers… need knowledge. Knowledge changes life stories.” ✨ 🇧🇷 In a sunlit room in the spring of 2022 in São Paulo, Brazil, about two dozen people gather to lay the foundation for a startup. They sit at student desks and evaluate the research results. They discuss what they know, what they need to learn and what they can teach. They share their hopes for the future of this new venture, for this startup is all about creating hope and building a future. 🚀 ♻️ This new institution is UNICATA, and the founders are Brazilian waste pickers—people who sift through garbage to look for recyclable materials—working with Canadian academics to develop plans and curricula. 🇨🇦 They are building a university. 📚 Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/g7pf_M_M Republished with permission from the University of Victoria. Did you know that Hazaar started off as a plastic-free society? Sarah Granville and Harriet N. were two friends at university who wanted to help reduce single-use plastic on campus. They used to run regular litter picks, canal cleans and talks educating students on how they can live a more sustainable life. The work with the society highlighted the wasteful culture that happens at university, where students end up buying brand new items that they could just buy from other students. If students are connected and can buy & sell from one another, this is a WIN for the environment and also for students pockets 💰 Our story is proof that you don't need to start off with a shiny business idea, if you have a mission and want to truly make impact, start with something small and you never know where it will take you... Today Hazaar is the only campus based student marketplace, powering 10 of the largest UK universities! 🌎⭐️ #startup #sustainability #studentsuccess #circulareconomy

Our partner Social Alpha recently released a report highlighting the impact created over the last four years under Phase 1 of Saamuhika Shakti. The report, titled “Revolutionising Empowerment: Transforming Waste Pickers' Lives Through Innovations,” captures insights from the two startup cohorts in Phase 1 and stories of waste pickers. It underscores the critical role of innovation in driving social change and economic empowerment. Our CEO, Mari Granström, opened the impactful panel discussion at the 2nd Mission Arena by Blue Mission Banos Project #bluemissionbanos (BAltic & NOrth Sea). The session, titled "Nurturing the regional innovation ecosystem", focused on on the support measures offered to companies and how they can facilitate success for startups in innovative blue sectors. The session involved active contributions from participants, which will help shape regional priorities. In the end, Mari revealed the action points that Origin by Ocean will be focusing on regarding the mission. One of the major focuses is, of course, regeneration. We want to make the value chain used for the chemical industry regenerative. As for the business support part of the mission, it also involves educating consumers about the value chain. Most people don't completely know what ingredients are used in their everyday products. It makes a big difference what you use at home, as most things we use on land end up in the waterways and oceans. Therefore, increasing awareness of the choices consumers make when buying products is vital. From this mission, we can actually say that we implement value chains that have an impact all the way from the feedstock, so from sea to land and land to sea. #OriginbyOcean #BlueMissionBANOS #balticsea #regeneration

Time to take a look at some recent climate tech funding round announcements that you may have missed💰 🌊 SeaO2 successfully closed its €2+ million seed round to accelerate its pioneering Direct Ocean Capture technology. The Amsterdam-based company uses its technology to remove CO₂ directly from seawater, helping mitigate climate change by enhancing the ocean’s natural ability to absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere. 🌻Energy tech firm Flower has closed its Series A funding with a further €20 million, bringing its round to an impressive €45 million. Flower’s AI-driven software enables grid operators to share data to optimise clean energy supply and demand. Led by Northzone, this round will fund the Swedish company’s pan-European expansion beginning in 2025. ♻️ Recyda GmbH has raised €6.3 million in a Series B round led by Cusp Capital. Based in Freiburg, the company’s packaging management software helps companies along the packaging value chain assess recyclability to help stem the global flood of packaging waste. The team plans to use the funds to expand into international markets, acquire new customers and accelerate product development. The diversity of companies receiving funding this month suggests the future of climate tech is bright! Congratulations to these pioneers - we look forward to seeing what’s next. #FundingRounds #StartupCommunity #Innovation #Entrepreneurship

It's been a year of contrasts—quiet yet intense, peaceful yet chaotic—during my maternity leave. Interestingly, after a temporal observation on both of my leaves, my luck seems to work best during this sacred time, with publishing 😅 Sharing our latest publication in Industry and Innovation: “Partnering with green start-ups: A vehicle for eco-Innovation?” co-authored with Anders Broström and Raffaella Cagliano. In this paper, we explore the dynamics of partnerships between large established firms and green start-ups, focusing on how these collaborations drive the adoption of eco-innovations. By examining initiatives aimed at reducing food waste, our research offers insights: 🔍 For Scholars: Our findings reveal that legitimacy-seeking rationales dominate the early stages of alliance formation. As alliances evolve, they transition into ambitions for eco-innovation, with capability-building and new revenue creation becoming the dominant motives. We illustrate how the quest for legitimacy enables established firms to adopt eco-innovations through alliances with green start-ups. 💼 For Managers: Our research shows how collaborations with green start-ups can enhance companies’ sustainability profile, foster eco-innovation, and unlock new revenue streams through such collaborative efforts. 🚀 For founders of Green Start-ups: We offer insights on how partnering with established firms can accelerate growth and amplify the start-ups' impact. 📖 Read the full article here (open access): https://lnkd.in/dSdm-JfT #Sustainability #GreenStartups #EnvironmentalAlliances
