Here's an article titled "Meet AdVon, the AI-Powered Content Monster Infecting the Media Industry." It's from Maggie Harrison Dupré of Futurism, and it should scare you, even if it doesn't surprise you: "What we found should alarm anyone who cares about a trustworthy and ethical media industry. Basically, AdVon engages in what Google calls "site reputation abuse": it strikes deals with publishers in which it provides huge numbers of extremely low-quality product reviews — often for surprisingly prominent publications — intended to pull in traffic from people Googling things like "best ab roller." The idea seems to be that these visitors will be fooled into thinking the recommendations were made by the publication's actual journalists and click one of the articles' affiliate links, kicking back a little money if they make a purchase." "It's a practice that blurs the line between journalism and advertising to the breaking point, makes the web worse for everybody, and renders basic questions like "is this writer a real person?" fuzzier and fuzzier." "And sources say yes, the content is frequently produced using AI." The entire story is fascinating, because it shows (1) that we're just at the beginning of a flood of digital content, (2) there are bad actors in the space, and (3) there's reason to believe we'll see an erosion of trust in this content. When people can no longer trust the the reviews they read on the internet, who are they going to turn to? The people that they are connected to. When there's too much content, we'll filter it through our communities. The rise of junk food content means that readers will be more discerning about who they read - much like they have done historically with where they consumed their offline print news. Personally, I trust very few sources of product review and I respect brands like Which? that have continued for years under a subscription model. Trusted brands and trusted authors will be more important as Gen AI is threatening to destroy human-written content. Right now, Gen AI is not capable of writing factually correct content. AI-generated content is filling up our newsfeeds…here are my two cents on it…and how I define originality, creativity, and innovation. 🎨 Uncle Joe pointed out to me how the bandwagon of data-driven decision making resulted in a monoculture of informational output. Regurgitating the patterns of the past. Stripped of any bravery for uncharted territory. 🦧 When every new move needs to first withstand the test of algorithmic chance of success, how likely will it yield something truly novel? 🌱 Perhaps it helps to distinguish between 1️⃣ Originality 2️⃣ Creativity 3️⃣ Innovation #Originality To me, this is the process of coming up with a recombination of old building blocks, that hasn’t been tried before. In music, this could be the strokes of piano tiles in a sequence previously unheard of. 🎹 #Creativity The act of artists who find a way to express their emotions through a medium that can be conveyed to other sentient beings. A pianist using the piano sounds as a vehicle to carry sentiments across space and time. 🧑🏻🎤 #Innovation This is when the creative work of artists develop a life of its own. When a song reaches the heart and souls of its listeners. When it enchants entire nations. When it fills stadiums. When it inspires communities. 🏟️ The rise of LLMs for the creation of social media content could be a tool to reshuffle old words into an original sequence. But judging by its internal structure (Dr. Pascal Wichmann), it is actually set up anti-original. The goal is precisely to predict the next word as one would expect it. It is not calibrated for the element of surprise. 😲☝️ LLMs might be able to help some artists convey their sentiments. Akin to how electronic sounds opened up new genres of music. 🎶 But the most basic sounds of drum and base will stay the same. It is up to us humans, how to innovate with it. It sure as hell won’t happen on its own. 🥁 Ever wondered why LLM adoption pioneers like Tom have found multiple use cases to leverage chatbots for the automation of mundane tasks in the practice of law, but refrain from using it for social media posts? It’s cause LLMs might be able to make us sound… …more sophisticated 🥸 …more elaborate 🧐 …more well-rounded 🙃 But they won’t make us speak more directly from the heart. 💜

Google joins tech giants to develop "nutrition labels" for AI-generated content. It's a great first step, but I wonder — while labelling could boost online trust (especially with elections around the corner), can we truly trust these same companies to effectively monitor themselves? Who decides what gets labelled, and how accurate are these labels? And, can our Digital Asset Management (DAM) systems keep up? How will these labels be visible and accessible within our DAMs? OpenAI announced another content deal with a major publisher. This is the latest agreement OpenAI has made in an effort to access content for training and to avoid a lawsuit from their previous uncompensated pilfering of training material. The agreement with Hearst provides access to high profile magazine titles like Cosmopolitan, Esquire and Elle and major metropolitan newspapers San Francisco Chronicle and Houston Chronicle among many others. Hearst owns over 20 magazines and 40 newspapers. OpenAI will feature links and content in ChatGPT and Search GPT results and Hearst will allow OpenAI access to all of its material for training models. No movement as of yet on the pending lawsuits from The New York Times, Chicago Tribune and the New York Daily News among several others. 5moThis article seems to see the trees through the forrest by taking the position that we should be surprised that publishers are using AI as a way to lower content creation, management and distribution costs (the advent of this has been written about ad nauseam), instead of asking the hard questions about management & oversight, or the broader strategic questions that revolve around publisher business models in a very dynamic environment. Instead it chooses an inevitable piece of technology as the scapegoat for systemic industry challenges. There are big issues at play here around the strategic choices publishers have to make to stay alive - few, if any are addressed here. I suppose there is a certain painful irony in this article being written by a human (I think!) and failing to grasp the real narrative.
