DO YOU THINK THE ESCRS MEETING IS HELD TOO EARLY IN SEPTEMBER?
I want to thank Filomena Ribeiro MD,PhD,FEBO for taking some time during her busy schedule at the last The European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) meeting to discuss with Alja Crnej and me an issue that it’s been affecting many ophthalmologists who are also parents: the dates of the ESCRS meetings. The beginning of September is also the beginning of schools in most countries. When the ESCRS is scheduled on those dates, working parents need to decide between staying home and helping their kids settle into school, missing the meeting completely, or reducing the days they attend (many times struggling to find help at home to look after their kids and make the beginning of school smooth enough). This unfortunately affects women ophthalmologists much more often than men, but there are also fathers who have had to miss the meeting for this reason.
This means not only that the ESCRS will miss a good number of attendants, but also that they won’t submit their research and presentations, since they won’t be sure they’ll be able to attend.
At a time when there’s a lot of discussions about inclusivity, having these meetings so early in September directly excludes a great number of working parents. I was very reassured to hear from Filomena Ribeiro MD,PhD,FEBO that she acknowledges this issue and is trying to push the dates of the meeting to slightly later in September. In my humble opinion as a working mother of three, late September or beginning of October would be the best dates for such a fantastic meeting, which is really an unmissable event in the year. Thank you Filomena Ribeiro MD,PhD,FEBO Oliver Findl
