“TPW’s 2023 Global Journey to Brazil was a reminder of why looking outside of Europe and North America is so important, whether or not we are funding there,” shares TPW Global Director of Programmes Sam Underwood in Alliance magazine on the abundance of social change ideas and innovation our group of funders experienced there. Read his reflections on how that abundance, along with lessons on urgency, proximity, and root causes, offer important learnings applicable to funders across geographies and issue areas: https://lnkd.in/gi9RWQhQ

Today is the fourth annual #NationalTruthandReconciliationDay, a day when we commemorate the tragic history and ongoing impact of residential schools in #Canada. At the same time, we understand that amplifying Indigenous voices and supporting Indigenous-led charities is both critical to reconciliation—and also just a starting point on a longer, deeper journey. If you’re looking to educate yourself and take action, there are numerous organizations, individuals, and ways to support. Start here. 👇

Today I learned that only 3.3% of donations in Canada support Indigenous charities. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is an opportunity to reflect on the intergenerational impacts of nearly a century of systemic abuse inflicted on Indigenous Peoples, including through the Canadian residential school system. Systemic discrimination, harmful government policies, and racism have created historic and modern injustices and inequalities — including long-term drinking water advisories, unequal access to healthcare and education, mental health crises for young people, and economic inequality. If you're looking to take action to address this, there are many organizations to support: CanadaHelps has an Indigenous Peoples Solidarity Fund, which includes more than 50 Indigenous-led charities from across Canada whose focus ranges from social services to arts and culture. There's also a movement where you can donate One Day's Pay, which is guided by The Circle on Philanthropy, a national Indigenous-led organization that works to transform the philanthropic sector to redistribute wealth, activate wisdom and strengthen organizational infrastructure for the purpose of Indigenous peoples, organizations, communities and nations. You can also amplify Indigenous voices, educate yourself and others, and advocate for systemic change. One Day's Pay, CanadaHelps, Wanda Brascoupe, Orange Shirt Society, Official Orange Shirt Society

Founded by Diana and most recently led by Forward Global member Dena, their Kendeda Fund sunset last year after spending down its assets through an approach that prioritized unrestricted giving, multiyear grants, trusting local leadership, and advancing equity. While closed, the Fund continues to serve as a bright example of the power and purpose of investing in impact, here and now. "Because the field is nascent, philanthropists and private investors can lead the way by testing, validating, and scaling up interventions that ensure access to wealth-generating assets at the base of the economic pyramid."
